Then came along Chevy, Buick, Chrysler, Dodge, and Volkswagen, etc. In the the luxury department came Cadillac, Bugatti, Mercedes, Rolls Royce, BMW, and the list goes on.

Not to leave the Toyota fan boys out =) Kiichiro Toyoda created Toyota Industries where he created the Type A engine and things went from there.

Was it really "light years ahead" of every other car produced at the time? I thought the Model T's claim to fame was mass prodction.

maybe mass production is why they say it was way ahead of its time... for some reason no i am getting no sound from the video and i am sure my speakers are on.. oh well

The model-T seems to have been a Rube Goldberg like contraption to operate. The Cadillac Type 53 which was built in the same era seems to have gotten it right. Check this out from Top Gear.

The model T out performs almost all 4x4's today off road! Sad but true, roads back then needed something that could drive over rough roads. I have seen the ad from 100 years ago of the model T driving through some really rough terrain and deep mud that only the Unimog and the H-1 could duplicate, sorry the rest would most likely be stuck.

I always thought Ford should reintroduce the Model T in a modernized form for its anniversary. I am not sure what it should look like, but it should be again a car built for the masses. Perhaps an affordable hybrid. That could repeat for Ford what they did from 1908 to 1928.

I like the idea of a peoples car built for the masses, and the hybrid idea was great too. Its just that someone (government, oil companies) doesn't want anyone to produce anything too efficient unfortunately.
