Ford says quality is up to par with Honda and Toyota
Ford has released in internal quality study that executives say show that FoMoCo’s quality is on par with Honda and Toyota. The study, conducted by RDA Group, of Detroit, shows that Ford’s brands improved 8 percent from last year with a combined average of 1,284 things-gone-wrong per 1,000 vehicles during the first three months of ownership.

Ford says that that compares with 1,250 things gone wrong for Honda and Toyota.

Ford is overcoming “the perception gap on our quality, the perception gap on how green we are, the perception gap around the technology and the features that we have in the vehicle,” said Mark Fields, Ford’s president of the Americas.

Ford is also launching a new advertising campaign called “Drive One” that touts its quality in order to get consumers to reconsider Ford vehicles.

I hope it is true. The big three really need to step it up.

Quality and fit and finish have improved a lot but technology is too far behind for me. I can't believe that the Lincoln MKX has a transversely mounted engine and that I can't even buy a V8 Lincoln any more.

I'd like some full disclosure about Ford's current oil pans. The last Grand Marquis that I bought instead of leased had a thin metal oil pan that rusted out 2 weeks before the warranty expired.

I think that reliability wise, they are close, but in terms of quality of parts and design, not yet.

Who cares about reliability in the first 3 months. lets drive the ford for 5 years and see where that reliability is. That should be Ford's focus, not 3 months when issues would be covered under warranty. Thats where the Honda's and Toyota's shine and thats what really matters. When the warranty is gone and you have to pay for repairs out of pocket.

the fact remains that quality gap between the the big majoir automakers is very slim, however the designs and the motovation to make me buy a ford or chrysler product isnt.

I'm gonna say that's a negative ghost rider... Honda and Toyota are generations ahead of Ford in the quality department.

F*&$#! On Race Day!

Had to add that one.

But who cares what they say, they also said they were giving us a great new focus. We got new sheetmetal, same whimpy engine, and same underpinnings, with wheelgap that would make a Jeep Liberty with a 4" country lift kit scream, or an H2 for that matter.

When you make a small car that is not even up to par with a Hyundai equivalent, something is wrong. When you give us a car called the Fusion but then introduce such a fine car like the Mondeo in Europe, we frown. When you offer the Focus ZX5 and Fiesta with powerful engines and great looks, but shun your home market, we get irate.

And when you make a claim to be as good as Honda and Toyota, we simply turn our heads and laugh.

I agree, we need an American Mondeo. I agree about the focus, we need the european one too :P

But that has nothing to do with the fact Ford is turning things around, and I do believe they are up there with the Japanese since I have a new Ford, and can personally attest to it.

Yea and you might have to replace a VW,or BMW tranny? Whats the point. I think it you look at everyones history, it will prove that the japanese rule when it comes to quality and reliability. Now yes the Ford might be up to German engineering standards of quality and reliability (VW especially) but I think they have a long way to go before they reach japanese standards for quality and reliability. yes Toyotas did slip but in the long run, I still would bet on that toyota anyday over a Ford, VW etc...

Even if they are, it will take even longer for the buying public to get over the stigma and perception of yesteryear.

I agree. I really believe Ford's quality (along with GM now) is excellent. Right their with Toyota and Honda. Unfortunately, that's not enough. Ford still has to earn people's trust back.

I have the 2006 Fusion and I can honestly say I have had minimum problems with it. Compared to the roads in the US our roads are absolutely the worse ever! It gets a beating everyday. Only problems I had is with the disc brakes that got spoiled because of water but it was changed for free and just the stupid rats that run around the streets bit the abs wire a few times. Otherwise it has been running smoothly and I just think the interior needs to have better materials.

Your right! The Fusion is nice, but guess what? its really a Mazda 6. So are we gonna congratulate Ford or Mazda. The Milan, Fusion and Lincoln MKZ(?) is a mazda 6 underneath.

he was probably upset being in special ed classes all thru grade skool.

while the advanced placement classes were full of asian kids.

now he's upset that his domestic heap is needing repairs all the time. while neighbors with asian cars (including KOREAN cars) can spend their cash on goodies instead of constant repairs.

I'd rather get a Mazdaspeed6 than a Fusion. AWD and turbo with MUCH better looks. The Fusion is very ho-hum in appeal.

Good news that Ford "quality" gets close to Honda's and Toyota's defect numbers in the first 3 months of ownership. That's 90 days!

But what about the first year, or the first 4 ot 5 years of ownership, during the warranty period? It'll take time to determine if they are on par there, but *that's* a metric that would impress the world at large!

Keep on keepin' on. Ford. Just remember the 4-year defects metric you'r striving for is what Toyota and Honda will have by end of Q1 2012, 4 years from now, as opposed to the figures they have today. Hopefully, they'll be better than today's numbers.

Good luck (no sarcasm intended or implied).

I agree with Ford's statement because American built Hondas and Toyotas have been slipping of late. I had a 2006 Civic that was full of problems (3 sets of front struts, jerky automatic transmission). The new Tundra and Camry have been plagued with bugs too. My Japan built S2000 and 4Runner have been flawless though.

I agree with Steve. First THREE months of ownership??? If Ford really wants to make a claim, then release stats on a study that spans at least a year. The fact that they're using stats from 3 months to make a claim just says nothing other than their cars don't hold up as well as Toyota or Honda in the long run.

I work in the fire protection industry and my company uses the F-250 for our work trucks. Biggest pieces of junk I've ever seen. We have to have two backup trucks at our shop for when one of the 250's breaks. There's hardly ever a time when one of our 15 trucks isn't in the shop. Bear in mind that non of them have more than about 60,000 miles on the clock either, and that's mostly highway.
I used to have an explorer and after 5 years and just over 100k miles the valves clattered, the driver's side door could only be unlocked from the inside, The arm rest on the center console was broken, the rear of the truck squatted and creaked like and old bed. My friends 13 year old blazer has a better ride than that POS explorer ever had.
If Ford doesn't make serious changes in the near future I don't see them being anything but a footnote before too long.

How can Honda and Toyota be equal? Toyota is having many problems and Honda is doing great! Ford, unfortunatly is still way behind. Although I will be happy to support our American neighbors when the American cars improve! My late great grandfather (American) always told me to buy American (even though I am Canadian) to support the economy.
