Ford to close 600 dealerships within the next few years
When Ford introduced its dearlership program last summer, executives expected it would be tough to cut down stores, increase sales per store and improve dealer profits. However, dealers seem to be heading out quicker than Ford expected.

300 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury plants will be gone by the end of 2007, half of the 600 the company hoped to get rid of by the end of the decade. Ford hopes that the fewer stores will sell more cars, giving them more...

fords turn...GM already has plans to close dealerships/factories, Mopar has workers walking out on them...i wonder which of the Big3 will file bankruptcy first?

i do expect GM to survive, Mopar has minimal attractive vehicles (Hemi)...then theirs Ford. their only respect is the mustang. and to be honest, they cant stop making enough special editions to save their life. sorry to say, but for Ford...things are looking bad!!!

go to work for Honda, Toyota or Hyundai... maybe even BMW if they're lucky, in US plants.

Where will the workers go? i can tell you one thing they won't be lenders in the housing industry, look between the housing meltdown, inflation , golbal warming, layoffs of the auto sector, health care issues, the war,the borders and a host of world wide issues this country needs a lot more bailout then a 5% or lower fed funds rate, that isn't the undelying problem it was a bloated economy fuled by 0% car loans and low payments on homes priced way to high with no real salary increases or no savings by Americans and $3 gas for cars that get a avg of 15mpg?.
. The only ones making out are the CEO's who wreck a auto company or a home improvment businees then get paid $200 million dollars to leave, this whole thing is crazy?

I doubt if auto mechanics will have any touble finding new jobs. As for car salesmen, they are usually redundant anyway and too many of them lack sufficient product knowledge to add much if any value to the sales process.

Actually everyone is saying GM will go first since having millions in debt compared to Ford. But i have a feeling Chrysler will go...

I have every confidence that GM will be the only dometic to survive. GM can be truly great again if they continue to focus on technical excellence and avoid the trap of relying on style alone.

Isn't this horribly sad? What could've been great American car companies and going down the drain.

When these American car companies start given the public what they really want, then maybe they can stop closing plants and start making cars.

chuck717,
You have to stop watching CNN. Housing meltown, global warming? Please do us a favor and sart watching FOX News, Cnn and MSNBC and please do some research before you start freaking out. If you keep an open mind you will find things are not what the news says they are.

The main reason Ford is going down the tubes besides not changing gears to better MPG auto's fast enough is that they do not have a clue about what Americans want and what Americans are about and the saddest thing is they don't care. The autos that they are putting out are what they think you should buy and if you dont buy them then youre just stupid. This is the same attitude as the extreme right and left.

I don't feel sorry for any of these UAW union workers. These unions are 80% of the reason for these catestrophic failures. Anyone who works for a company who rewards seniority over performance and ends up in a pickle because of an unexpected change in employment status has himself (herself?) to blaim for any financial hardship.
