Ford to launch ECOnetic version of Fiesta with 67mpg
Joining the Ford Focus ECOnetic later this month will be an ECOnetic version of the new Ford Fiesta. And if Ford not offering Focus ECOnetic in the U.S. made you angry, get a little more mad because we don’t expect the Fiesta ECOnetic to make it to the stateside either. But hey, at least we’ll get the Fiesta hatchbacks in 2010.

Power comes from a 1.6L TDCi turbodiesel that will make 89 horsepower. Mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic will return a combined fuel-economy of 80mpg...

It's getting silly now. I know we have to wait a few years for a good selection of next gen vehicles, but when I look around at what could be sold here now, all I can do is laugh. This would be a prime candidate to be the top selling vehicle in the US for the next 6 months to a year straight. Am I totally off base?

You're 100% correct, but U.S. emissions regulations are so ridiculous that cheap high mpg diesels can't be sold here. Blame the EPA and the "greeniacs" for that.

no you are 100% right, the US needs this car ASAP. But we also have to figure out why Diesel costs more here when it shouldn't. If Ford brought this car here they could actually becoem a leader rather than a follower.

Diesel costs more here because our refining capacity is geared toward gasoline (something like a 75/25 split...I think). An exponentially expanding US fleet of diesel cars will only exacerbate the situation.

We refine and consume gas here, diesel goes to EU.

09ctsvform, so if we get more diesels our diesel fuel will get more expensive rather than cheaper? damn, we are screwed

I dont think that's the whole diesel story. If we're overproducing so much diesel that we ship the rest of it to other nations, surely there should be enough to use more at home. The simple fact that we already make to much makes the supply argument moot. I think the real trick is that the trucking industry is built on diesel. And since people need there clothes, food, building supplies ect, no matter the cost, diesel demand will always be steady no matter the price. Big oil can effectivly set diesel prices wherever they like and we consumers see a marginal shift in the cost of our products. Are you really going to say "Gee, I think a 5 cent price increase in my Big Mac is a travesty and I wont pay?!?"

With numbers like this it will be the new king of economy cars! I'll sell my 2007 civic for this until something better comes around. And why does it have to be diesel? What ever happened to the gas engines that run like a diesel with higher torque and better fuel mileage? And why does it take so long for anyone to get these cars!

My understanding is that the problem with diesel style gas engines is that they run too hot and are rather dirty. HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) gas engines are where most of the research is happening, but the difficulty in HCCI engines is controlling knock... or rather making it knock at the correct time.
