Fords new Capri will share a platform with the Mondeo
As a part of Ford’s global-model strategy, Ford of Europe will be responsible for most of the design and engineering. Why? Well that’s really the only FoMoCo division that is profiting and has the capabilities to produce models of such caliber.
Along with working on the next-generation Ford Mondeo, which we are expected to see re-badged as a Ford Taurus in the U.S., Ford of Europe is also working on a small sport coupe in attempt to revisit the Ford Capri.
The Ford Capri was design and built in Europe back in the day and was sold in North America from 1970 to 1977 through Ford’s Lincoln/Mercury dealerships. However, the Ford Capri carried no brand badging when it was sold in the U.S.; it simply carried the Capri badge. However...

I agree, If they would sell cars like that here in the states, they wouldn't have to worry about all of their sales going to imports.

That car isn't a capri but the Ionis concept... But hopefully the Capri will look like this... Because yes, it does look really good!

Wow... we've got ourselves a real bona fide car expert here... "The original Mercury Capri"... WHAT THE H*LL!!! The original Capri was not a mercury! It was the Ford Capri... First model year was the 1969 and it was a small coupe build for Europe... Just like this is going to be!

I think that's a pretty hot looking Ford.

Dead and gone, good riddance! The Capri hasn't looked good for 30 years. This is a fresh look.

Wow,
The Capri does look good. Unfortunately it will not look like that when in production. However if it looks half as good as the Mondeo Ford already has a winner there.
The Mondeo is by far the best looking modern Ford to date.

Ford and GM's European divisions have long produced good cars that sold well. I always wondered why they bothered designing cars specifically for the U.S. market when the European Fords or Opels could be modified to meet U.S. laws and manufactured here. In addition to excellent product, think of all the money they would save!
Hard times in the U.S. market have deprived GM and Ford of the profits needed to fund R&D for a lot of U.S.-exclusive cars. They are now forced to lean ever more heavily on their European divisions, which is what they should have done in the first place.
If only Chrysler had a thriving European operation!

Simple, 1)because we were too patriotic and dumb/proud to care, 2) to cut cost and save money. Why bring a car like that to a market who is already brainwashed to not want such a car.

Whoever wrote this article is obviously dumb. The current Mondeo is built off the same platform as the Fusion. It WILL NOT be the Taurus. That car is larger is every way.

The Capri is a legend. It was only sold in the US from 70 to 77 but there was a Capri in Ford Europe's line up from about 68 to 86.
Everyone had one :)

Don't forget Mercury had the Capri in the early 90's as a 2 door convertible. It sold really well then too.

That concept does look fantastic, however, the pictured car is not the capri, but the Ionis concept which was going to show the general line for future european models (Starting with the mondeo). However, I wouldn't be surprised if the Capri looks quite a bit like the concept.
