BMW has patented its creation of an exhaust manifold that works by ensuring that each turbo is given a burst of exhaust gas at even intervals – something that’s not normally possible on a twin-turbo V8 engine.

BMW’s M performance division has devised this manifold that aids in reducing turbo lag.

Like every other turbocharged engine in the world, BMW’s N63 engine — the 400-hp 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 used in the X6 and 750i — suffers from turbo lag. The lag in BMW’s turbo engines, if compared to other brands, is minimal. If compared to normally aspirated engines though, the engine’s response to the accelerator pedal is less than immediate. BMW M engines have been known for their instant response as individual throttle bodies have been used to minimize the delay.
