Former Chrysler CEO Lee Iacocca endorsed Mitt Romney for president on Thursday, saying the GOP candidate is the best choice to fix the economy.

Romney, who has faced criticism for opposing the $85 billion auto bailout in 2008 with an op-ed titled "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt," could get a boost in Midwestern states like Ohio and Michigan with the nod of one of the best known U.S. auto executives.

"Mitt Romney has successfully led both public and private sector turnarounds. He is a bright and successful man; he is a good man, a caring man, a man of integrity, family and faith. Importantly, he recognizes we are in a tough situation," Iacocca said in a statement released by his office.
