Can you get the Ford Escape with the Freelander 2 package at a much lower cost?

rocker,

there are no common parts between an escape and a freelander. freelander is based off EUCD chassis - Volvo S80. Engine is a Volvo I-6.

please do no spread misinformation. different chassis, different engine, different tranny, different suspension.

Dude, are you kidding me? Look at it and cover the Freelander and Land Rover emblems and logos, it's an ESCAPE.

speedmaster, I love I-6 engines as they are inherently in near-perfect balance but, if the Freelander has it transversely mounted like Volvo, I don't want it.

Just because it's a small SUV it doesn't mean it's a re-badged Escape. The only re-badged Escapes are the Mercury Mariner and Mazda Tribute.

Rocker,
The 2006 Saturn Vue has the same shape and form as the Freelander2, Does that mean it is the same car.

Can you back your claim or willing to make a $100 wager that the Escape/LR2 is the same car/rebadged. Sorry, you can't.

They may have a common shape but they're not the same car as a Highlander/RX or Escalade/Tahoe.

No shared engine.
No shared transmission
No shared suspension design.
No Shared interior. HVAC/Seats/Nav/Steering wheels all different.
Different seat layout. Different cockpit.
There are no shared components.

The original Freelander was designed originally in 1993 off a rover chassis. The new one is off a EUCD chassis. THere are no EUCD chassis cars except the S80 and the new Volvo C30.

I can cite you specific examples:
Escape 2008

Exterior
Length: 174.7 in. Width: 71.1 in.
Height: 68 in. Wheel Base: 103.1 in.
Curb Weight: 3272 lbs.

LR2

Length: 177.1 in. Width: 75.1 in.
Height: 68.5 in. Wheel Base: 104.7 in.
Curb Weight: 4255 lbs.
Gross Weight: 5520 lbs.

It's called platform sharing. And yes the LR2, Escape, Tribute and CX9 all share the same platform. If Ford's trying to reduce cost why in the heck would they develop a whole new platform for an entry level LR2? Save a buck or two.

"It's called platform sharing. And yes the LR2, Escape, Tribute and CX9 all share the same platform."

I completely understand this. I understand the LR2 shares the same platform as the Euro Ford Focus. I also understand the LR2 shares the chassis with the Volvo.

But it shares nothing with the Ford Escape which is based off the Ranger platform. The CX9 platform is based off the Mazda 6.

There is platform sharing and there is simple misinformation based on similarities.

Get it?

Platforms don't have to be exactly the same. Look at the Saturn Vue vs Chevy Equinox. Ta da!!

Look at the 2 side by side. If they don't share platforms then they share sheetmetal which is even worse. BMW dumped Land Rover right after they had redesigned the Range Rover and Ford has yet to do a drastic redesign since then. Why would BMW do all that work then dumped it because it had turned into a crap carmaker? Then Ford came out with the Freelander(anyone have a comment on this overpriced POS). Denial and defend. No shared components? This is a rebadged vehicle. Do you think Ford has the money to have division design their own cars. Make it $1,000.
