French Auto Spies Get Nabbed By Authorities-So Much For Freedom Of The Press?

Authorities have been conducting an investigation against Auto Plus since last August after Renault complained that the magazine had published pictures and details of a new model not due to be launched for another three years.

On Tuesday, officials raided the magazine's offices, sparking fierce complaints that the confidentiality of reporters' sources had been undermined.

Do you think they are right to do this or should the Auto Plus guys go to the slammer?

Well, there is a line between the freedom of the press and industrial espionage. This is not just some grainy image; there are multiple images of everything including the interior. It strikes me as fairly obvious that the person who took them probably works for Renault and needs fired.

The fundamental problem here is that this car not being unveiled tomorrow, it is years away from market, meaning that these images give competitors an information advantage.

Frankly, I think Auto Plus should have thought things through a bit better, the consequences or punishment for such I don’t care to delve into, though.

Well said. Having one of their most important models revealed to their rivals years before launch might result in financial losses for Renault, especially as this car signals their new design direction and offers innovate styling features which will no doubt be imitated.

Freedom of the Press? I am not a lawyer but The first ammendment to the United States Constitution has no bearing on what the French do. Maybe their constitution has it, maybe not. Aren't we assuming though?

While the 1st amendment provision is unique to the United States, the concept of freedom of the press is not. Most developed countries have something very similar, usually bound to freedom of expression clauses- it also shows up in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

As a supplier to the Auto Industry, I know what it is like to have signed an NDA, only to have info leaked by someone else, it puts everyone involved in the project under the spot-light which is unpleasant and well out of order as most people are just trying to do their jobs!

I think the fact that the magazine paid the Renault employee 1,500 euros per picture speaks for itself.
