General Motors' hourly workers will get smaller profit sharing checks next year, CEO Mary Barra said today, just as the automaker prepares to head into contract talks with the UAW.

Barra said the charges the automaker has taken to cover recall costs will cut into the profit sharing checks of the company's workers.

GM has recorded more than $2.5 billion so far this year in costs related to the recall of cars with potentially defective ignition switches and other recalls.
