GM considering a Pontiac version of the Volt
The Chevrolet Volt craze continues as we await the arrival of the most anticipated plug-in hybrid due out in 2010. We already know that GM is considering a Cadillac version of the Volt. GM executives are now considering a Pontiac version.

Susan, Docherty, GM’s North American vice president of Buick, Pontiac and GMC is suggesting that if one of the three brands were to get a version of the Volt, it most probably be a Pontiac - which would most likely have to be fun, fast, quick and sharp.

“My personal take: I think [the Volt] would make a great Pontiac,” Docherty told PopularMechanics. “What greater brand than...

To be honest here, this idea doesn't stand a chance of happening. GM will have a very limited supply of battery packs and components. Chevy has first dibs on those since the whole Volt concept is tied directly to it. Caddy could get a version since it is GMs premium brand. But Pontiac isn't a fit for the idea of a Volt. It is supposed to be excitement, soul, and performance not necessarily economy. Quite frankly I would expect the Pontiac brand manager to try and make the case for a new exciting product to come to their brand (it is her job after all).

I realise there are car companies that can "re-badge" a car design and make it a commercial success (e.g. Toyota and some of the Lexus lower models) but for some strange reason, I just don't like it when GM does it. I'll admit my ignorance but I have an impression that Pontiac and Buick are coat-tailers to what Chevrolet create and I can't imagine feeling satisfied buying Pontiac and Buick models. The same thought applies to this rumour of Pontiac living off Chevrolet.
