GM plans more restructuring, plans to build smaller cars and crossovers
A source familiar with GM’s plans told The Associated Press that GM’s top managers are working on additional restructuring moves to deal with the declining U.S. market and the shift away from trucks and SUVs to more fuel-efficient compact cars.

The anonymous source said the plan is still under work and would not give any details on what Rick Wagoner and his main men are talking about. However, many expect the same type of plan that Ford laid out last week by shifting away from truck and SUV production and a faster rollout of more crossover and car models.

GM has already announced that it will quickly eliminate...

I think GM will do very well this time in the compact market, they have done very well with changes they have made in their line up of cars.

I have seen so many so many Great articles about GM lately. and I believe they are real player and are going to be a big player in the compact market.

GM seems like GM is a brand new company, with so many Great and Exciting cars in their line up now, I think GM is a real player and I believe they have it going on! I beleive GM will come out with some Great compact cars that will really compete in the compact market!!!

Agreed, GM is obviously serious about shaking off old perceptions and delivering better products.

Good on 'em!

OK, remember when the government gave out tax incentives for buying the big trucks and SUV's? The big 3 US auto mfgs sold a lot of inventory due to the incentives. Now that a lot of Americans have the big trucks and SUV's...the gas prices start to go up.....seems orchestrated.

Now GM is hurting for sales and people want to trade in the big vehicles for smaller ones...how convenient. A good way to sell more vehicles...create a need.

The tax incentive to buy a bigger vehicle never made much sense. Other than helping the small business owner, everyone wondered why would the government put such an emphysis on this tax incentive.

Well, if you follow the money..the ones that benefited the most.
1. Oil companies - Selling more gas.
2. American Auto Industry - The makers of big vehicles.

Just my 2 cents...not saying it is the truth, just something to ponder. Maybe the start of a good debate?

"OK, remember when the government gave out tax incentives for buying the big trucks and SUV's?"

That's not entirely accurate. When introduced in the 70's, the incentive was for farmers and self employed people to buy work trucks and such without getting penalized with a luxury tax.

Since then, luxury SUVs bloated up past the 6k lb line and self employed people (like doctors and lawyers) took advantage of the loop hole.

GM is finally learning...damn!!! Good to hear and don't take this the wrong way but thank competition..especially Toyota for making GM a better company. GM has potential but also had huge overhead. GM will be fine...actually great!

Hasn't this story been around for years now, and we have yet to see anything. Don't forget, GM and the other 2 hardly have any experience in building compact cars anymore. They don't have the technology, R&D capability, or the cost structures to do so. This is how we get things like rebadged Daewoos, Suzukis, and companies like Nissan building for Chrysler. I still think they're too much out of the loop to devliver something as good as the VW Rabbit, Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, or Toyota Yaris.
