GM recalls Buick Regal, Pontiac Grand Prix 1997-2003 Vehicles
GM is recalling 207,542 MY 1997-2003 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles equipped with a 3.8L supercharged V-6 engine. Certain underhood fires may be caused by drops of engine oil being deposited on the exhaust manifold through hard braking. If the manifold is hot enough and the oil runs below the heat shield, it may ignite into a small flame and, in some instances, fire may spread to the plastic spark plug wire channel. Read Article

I heard about this back in 2004, when I worked at a Toyota dealership service department. I was the used car inspection manager, and the mechanic said the same thing about all the GM V-6 cars, NA or forced induction: they all leaked oil.
Chickens coming home to roost. I'm sure this is something GM knew about, but they cheesed out instead of fixing it while the cars were in production.

Thanks for this perspective "gooch." Too often car manufacturers cut corners and more often than not, it is American companies doing it to the American consumer. You don't see this behavior from the Big 3 when selling "most" of their cars overseas. Heck, the Buick line in China alone puts our own to shame. And then some knucklehead (GM Rep and I don’t mean show and tell model), at the LA Auto Show tells me that Americans always want what they can't have and he was alluding to the "fact" that we don’t want to pay too much for our cars. I guess I have to agree, why should we for cars with lousy reputations… I think GM is turning around and heck maybe thanks to Lutz. Time well tell, cars can look great but when they are being recalled by the masses, they loose curb appeal really quick.

Toyota says they are recalls to a point , they say that they are "fine tuning them " and I guess GM can call them that too
