GM to almost double V6 engine output
GM is planning on expanding its plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico in order to increase production of its 6-cylinder engine. The extension will ad about 350,000 V6 engines to the plants capacity raising it from the current 590,000 to 940,000 per year.

GM said that the next-generation of the engine, known as the HFV6, will be 6 percent more powerful than the current version. The upcoming Chevrolet Traverse will use a version of the engine.

GM also said that the plant will produce...

Odd that the bow-tie version has the most flat and bland looking interior, especially when it will probably end up being the volume leader over the Arcadia, Enclave, and Outlook.

Gm has given Chevy a "play it safe" styling like asian cars have, but with just enough zing to make it look good.

What, are you trying to take the "bigotted a$$hole" award away form amazinbimmer? What race or nationality are that is so superior that you can classify an entire nationality of people as lazy?

Did you know BMW buys pats from GM? Did you know that BMW and GM have been partners in developing drive coponents for years, not t o mention a new hydrogen drive train in the near future?

Yeah, I agree Damikco. the 5 speed that BMW came out with in the late 90's in the 5 and 7 series is a GM transmission. It replaced to older, yet bulletproof ZF 4hp-22eh transmission.

Actually this is extremly good news.

It seems GM has decided to follow the path of Nissan. Whereas Nissan has the VQ35 V6 engine that took the automotive world by storm...GM is putting up its comprable new Direct Injection V6 architecture (the LLV in the CTS) as its line standard. Great engine choice. And along with that its giving it a bump of over 18hp which puts it at 322hp (if they are basing the HFV6 on the LLV6 architecture...which it sounds like they are). Thats right up there with what the new VQ is doing.

Great choice GM. concentrating on the V6 instead of the V8 (although you have to have a couple vette's and CTS-V engines) will allow room for chassis and transmission development...not to mention the extra room that will open up in engine bays for extra little add-ons...from the world of forced induction possibly?

;-)

wait what???!??

Direct Injection V6 gets slightly better fuel economy than the non-direct injected motor, somewhere from 3%-6%. In fact, since the combustion is so much more controllable, engineers have to make sure not to make the fuel/air mix too lean otherwise there will be too much NOx being produced.

Get your facts strait.

I hope this god-awful oil crisis ends soon. Haters out there don't realize how bad it is for everyone. Once again, detroit makes trucks that people and businesses use. Try hauling your lawn-company's equipment trailer with your toyota corolla. I just hope the govt taxes gas so that if oil plunges, people aren't too tempted to needlessly buy inefficient vehicles, while still making it cheap enough for companies & people who need trucks to have V8's.

I have to give GM some credit, they are producing world class powertrains these days. Variable cylinder mgmt would have been nice though.

But OHC engines have a harder time integrating this tech into V6 designs, that is why to my knowledge Honda is the only company making a variable displacement/cylinder OHC V6 at the moment. And NVH were big hurdles for them

Lots of companies have working DOHC engines with cylinder de-activation, they're just not released to the public yet.

They're also a lots more expensive to build, much more complicated. Sad thing is, the pushrod engine has a lot of benefits because of its simplicity and relative cheap cost.

Dual VVT, cylinder de-activation and direct injection pushrod V8........ Now I want that in a muscle car.
