Chrysler expects its year-to-date sales of the Fiat 500 in North America will top 27,000 by the end of June, more than it sold in all of 2011, according to Tim Kuniskis, head of the Fiat brand in North America.

Last year, Chrysler sold 19,769 Fiat 500s in the U.S. and a total of 26,294 in North America -- far short of company projections of a total of 50,000 for the year.

Reasons for the shortfall included more time needed than expected to open Fiat dealerships and a delayed national marketing campaign.
