Geneva Preview: Audi Q7 V12 TDI is here with 500hp and 20mpg
Geneva is definitely going to be huge and green this year. We first saw the Audi Q7 V12 TDI Concept at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, and now the production version is finally here. The German automaker has just announced that it will be unveiling the production Audi Q7 V12 TDI quattro next week, the most powerful diesel-powered SUV in its class.

Power comes from a 6 liter V12 TDI engine that produces 500 horsepower and a peak torque of 757.56 lb-ft. The Audi Q7 V12 TDI sprints from 0-62mph in a quick 5.5 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

Even will all that power and performance this beastly diesel Q7 consumes 11.9 liters of fuel per 100km (that’s 20mpg on the stateside). Audi says that’s significantly less fuel than any competing gas powered engine in the high-performance SUV sector.

So Audi, how about a production version of the Audi R8 V12 TDI Concept at next year’s Geneva show?

Diesel, yes, green, no.
6 litre anythings are never green.

Get a 50 cc Moped then Rupert! This is going to be one costly machine to purchase so Audi should give it an aluminum body to avoid rust-out. A vehicle like that with an aluminum body should last long enough to be passed down to at least two succeeding generations.

Enn - I did!

But it won't have aluminium as that would be way too expensive, but what's the concern about rust? With modern galvanized bodies rust is a thing of the past (although perhaps those Grand Marquises you had have put you off).

Rupert, The Q7 V12TDi is already very expensive and aluminum would give it much extra value at small incremental percentage increase in cost. I had 3 Grand Marquis cars and only the first one rusted out because I kept it too long and Ford failed to protect against rust properly. The last two were on a two-year lease so I did not care is they rusted out on Ford's storage lot later. The only car I am aware of that is properly galvanized, primed and painted is the Audi. which stays rust-free for years and years. Aluminum is better than galvanized steel because it is lighter and, if you scratch the paint through the primer, you still don't have to worry about rust.

'pointless', 'overdone'...

i think you guys are missing the point of the vehicle. they aren't attempting just another trim level on the Q7 range. one could argue that conceptually this has more in common with the R8.

Please spare us your Lexus bias. No one cares. Your viewpoints regardless other carmakers are pointless because they all negative and always end in Lexus this, Lexus that. Go drive you wheelchair already and spare us taking up space here.

Definitely, will require a fat wallet to purchase!

Oh this will pollute a hell more than the LS600h, the Q7 is a big, heavy vehicle, but I think we're comparing apples and oranges here...I don't think Audi have ever said this is 'green', I think magazine editors and certain Agents have said that. It's clearly a polluting machine, but does display advancements in the diesel field (like very high injection pressures), which means it has good mpg and CO2 for a vehicle of this size and performance.
For example, let's compare it to vehicles of similar size and expected performance, the LX570 and the GL550. They officially do: LX 0-60 in 7.4 and 18 highway mpg (which sucks, frankly), and the GL 0-60 in 6.2 and 21-ish highway mpg.
'They' say that the Q7 V12 will do 0-60 in about 5.8 or under seconds (as the V8 diesel does it in 6.2-ish), and get 25 highway MPG, which to me is impressive.
Incidentally that 4.2 tdi Q7 makes quite a bit of sense - 0-60 6.2 and 21 combined US mpg, good for a vehicle that large, and a lot better than petrol-powered brethren like the LX, GL or even Audi's own 4.2 fsi.

The V12 TDI is more fuel efficient than the regular gasoline V6 and V8 versions, less C02 as well. And its fuel consumption is only a little more than the V8 TDI version. You basically get way more performance with no sacrafices.

The V10 Touareg eats 23.2 barrels of oil a year and 12.4 tons of CO2.
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/2008car1tablef.jsp?id=24156

A Cadillac Escalade uses 24.5 barrels and 13.1 tons of CO2.
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/compx2008f.jsp?year=2008&make=Cadillac&model=Escalade%20AWD&hiddenField=Findacar

The mpg ratings may be different, but the Germans have found another way to do exactly the same thing the Americans do. Holier than though hypocrites.

The V12 TDI Q7 is even more fuel efficient than the V10 Touareg.

Audi Q7 V12 TDI: 11.9 liters per 100 km, 315 grams of C02 per km

VW Touareg V10 TDI: 12.6 liters per 100 km, 333 grams of C02 per km

Cadillac Escalade: 16.2 liters per 100 km, 383 grams of C02 per km.

So the V12 diesel gets you way more perfromance, way better fuel economy and a lot less emissions.

why not use that technology on a v8 with a reasonable amount of hp and better gas mileage than im going to assume just 20mpg combined.

Audi does wiht the Q7 V8 TDI, it gets 21.2 mpg combined against 19.7 for the V12 TDI.

yeah but 20mpg from v12 and those specs is amazing, i mean honestly, if they can get that from a v12 and those specs, there has to be away for them to get around 30+ for a v8 with a reasonable amount of power nothing super but good amount, or even a make v6 with monster power and high epa ratings, make a green high performance suv just doesnt make sense its an alternative to a class that one one really buys how many ml63, cayenne turbos do you see

Why would anyone need this much performance in an SUV. It won't drive and handle like a Sports car. SUVs are just opposite of Sports cars like heavier, taller...etc

SUVs should be just spacious, luxurious and good at off roading. Instead of giving this much importance to Performance on road, companies should make them more better offroad. Which is the right way for SUVs.

Look to me they r just copying What Porsche is doing with Cayenne(wrong way).

and btw also would like to see how it compares to the regular Q7 4.2 Petrol in mpg, perofrmance...etc

Q7 V8 FSI - 0-60: 7.2 and 17 US combined, with 310 g/km CO2
Q7 V12 TDI - 0-60: 5.5 and 20 US combined, with approx. 315 g/km CO2.

A better choice (the V12 is just too extreme) is the 4.2 V8 TDI, which gets:
0-60: 6.2, with 22 US combined and 296 g/km CO2.

There is also a new 240 hp 3.0 tdi, which gets: 0-60 8.2, and 25 US combined, and 260g/km CO2.

Honestly I'd be perfectly happy with the V6 3.0 TDI.

Yeah, 8.2 sec is actually pretty quick for a huge SUV like this. Although it would be hard for me to resist the 4.2TDI.

Hold on to your horses guys, this vehicle is a "halo" car. It is not meant to be mass produced, we will very unlikely see it coming to the US and it will be limited production as Quattro GMBH is building it. It's purpose is to bring attention to the diesel technology to other audis in the line up.
Much like the R8 brings attention to the brand and brings people to the showrooms.

Agents/Spies: Where is the Q5? No show, no show, no show. Audi makes 75 versions of the Q7 and everyone just follows along. They blow an announced intro on the Q5 big time and everyone just follows along. How about some real spying?

Chewy,
Missed my last sentence? I said mpg aside, both SUVS require the same amount of oil per year.

Somethings fishy if the diesel gets better mileage but still ends up requiring the same volume of imported oil. Could it be diesel really does need more oil to make?

Compare that to the Yukon 4WD hybrid. 20mpg and 17.1 barrels of oil per year and only 9.2 tons of CO2.
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/compx2008f.jsp?year=2008&make=Chevrolet&model=Tahoe%20Hybrid%204WD&hiddenField=Findacar

Doesn't matter how many cylinders you put on a diesel, it'd be better as a smaller hybrid (at the very least, it'd be cleaner).

So the Escalade needs over 42 gallons more fuel per year and emits nearly 1 ton more CO2?
Over 42 gallons difference is hardly "The same amount of oil".
The V10 diesel isn't the best of a bunch, it only gets 3 mpg better than the Escalade, so it's obvious that barrels per year won't change hugely.

I agree with Rupert though, the V6 TDI would be good enough. If you can afford the Q7, it's probably not your only vehicle.

Exactly - the 3.0 TDI has sufficient power and torque to pull it along at a decent pace - it's not like it's slow or anything. Who really needs their SUV to sprint to 60 in 7 seconds or under?
