Geneva Preview: Mercedes GLK BLUETEC HYBRID gets 40mpg
With all the Geneva previews we’ve been showing you recently, it definitely seems like a lot is going to go down at the 78th International Motor Show. After showing us Vision GLK FREESIDE and the GLK TOWNSIDE at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, Mercedes will roll into Geneva with the GLK BLUETEC HYBRID.
Power comes from a 4-cylinder BLUETEC diesel engine mated with a hybrid module. This combination produces 224 horsepower with 413 lb-ft of torque and the ability to go from 0-62 in 7.3 seconds with a top speed of 133mph. Even with those performance figures, the GLK BLUETEC HYBRID gets 40mpg and achieves the world’s lowest CO2 emissions in the SUV segment.
While this is just a concept, Mercedes does mention at the end of the press release that this combination...

Great! I just attended the car show in Edmonton, Alberta -- what a waste of time: $10 for parking and $24 for 2 senior's tickets to get in. I had to walk 1/2 a mile trough mud and ice to get from the car to the building -- I'll never go back again. Mercedes diid not even have a GLK on display and the 2009 Subaru Forester was locked on a stupid slanted stand. The new Hyundai Genesis was there but it was on a high rotating pedestal that had stopped rotating and it was locked and inaccessible also.

omg amazing MB i am very surprised to hear this and i thought hybrids could not get any better according to some of you here. Toyota had better make sure that there 4th gen synergy drive is better or at least par with this or else they wont be at the top of the hybrid game anymore.

Yes, I like the idea of mating Diesel and electricity. Lets hope that this makes it into production and create a hybrid that actually has a purpose.

I'll be happy with the pure diesel version -- no hybrid for me.

@ zairnaim,
Can you say that a little louder and make your text flash in a neon red!?
Because I'm so sick and tired of the Toyota nut jobs that come on this forum pining about their hybrids AND ignorantly dismiss other forms of modern technologies.

Very impresive numbers. The looks are OK, but just that. I would def put it on top of the X3.

Lexus Hybrids just got Owned BIG TIME at their own game.
Lowest CO2 Emissions for SUV = A luxury hybrid thats actually green
And 40MPG is approaches Prius territory, except in style and class.

except that the Prius actually exists, whereas this is a concept.

This vehicle does not exist, a vehicle is a sum of its parts-in this case a hybrid engine mated to a bluetec diesel. Either one may exist on its own, but together, in this vehicle, nope. Sorry, they call it a concept for a reason. Look up the word concept.

"This vehicle does not exist..."
Weren't you the guy who was spamming these forums with the next generation "100 mpg Prius"? Or was that your buddy Huu76? Because that vehicle doesn't exist as well. So zip it.

Now if they could just combine it with decent styling we may just have a winner!

0to60, I am with you. Performance with economy but styling only a mother could love. And some poeple thought the X3 looked bad..... yeesh! It reminds me of an oversized Subaru Forrester.

Everyone keeps saying that but I personally LOVE the styling. It's soooooo reminiscent of my W124's!

What?!?!?!? We need this engine right away.
This 2.2 liters Bluetec beats the current US 3.2 liter!!! We then could get even better mileage here!

As soon as I can get a GLK 220 Blutec, I will have one. Finally a vehicle that's well suited for what I need.

I think more manufacturers should implement the Diesel-Hybrid combo. IMO it is a winning combination.

Toyota RAV4 2.2L Diesel uses 6L/100km but is dirtier (173g/km). Probably the same leftover engine from the IS220d that Toyota found kicking around.
Way to confirm that Toyota was right MB, hybrid makes everything cleaner and better.
Not sure how MB managed to NOT get better fuel economy with a hybrid is beyond me though.
spellchecker,
You're hopeless.

The Rav 4 2.2 gets WORSE gas mileage by 6 mpg and is more than 2 seconds slower to 60. How you came to the conclusion you did is what's beyond me.

w209,
Prius is 4.4L/100km so the GLK still has a way to go. Also, the Prius is real, right now, not TBD.
