Yea, just to add to this. The term third world is offensive to many people and isn't the appropriate term to describe the people or nations of a poorer society. One of my professors who was born in Sierra Leone was quite offended when someone used this phrase.

You actually are correct and the comment made about the third world was made at a conference that brought awareness to the children soldiers in Sierra Leone as well as the state of affairs in other countries within Africa. There is a lack of development in these countries, even with the amount of aid being sent, but this still does not mean that the people found within these countries are inferior and should be referred to as from the "3rd World". They had just as much of a choice being born where they are as we had; as most of us were lucky enough to be born in a country that offers much more of an opportunity for success. While many people on this forum argue about luxury automobiles that they haven't even driven, i believe a large majority of the people on this site are either too young or too ignorant to understand the world beyond their small spectrum.

I'm willing to bet that some of the "auto engineers" and "experts" on this site write their insightful articles sometime after coming home from high school.

Just to add a little note...... Poor countries are poor because you people made them poor when you came in and stole the country's wealth...... And then you call them 3rd world!!!! Im not talking about any of you people...... Just your past governments. Anyway thanks for removing the 3rd world term from the article.......

This discussion shows how far this whole political correctness uselessness has gone. You will be hard pressed to find a single book in IPE that does not refer to the Third World.

A lot of problems are with the fact that people do not understand the origins of the terminology. Its origins are in the Post-WWII Cold war era:

"The First World contained the United States and its allies in Western Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and later Japan. The Second World was composed of the communist states of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. The Third World was the term used for the rest of the world's states which were occupied with the process of development."1

Now I understand that it is used in current parlance with the connotation of backwardness, if you will. That is strictly not true in such instances the appropriate term is LDC: lower [or less] developed country.

Contemporary Marxists maintain their own specific terminology to handle the situation. They break the wold into "core" "periphery" and "semi-periphery" states. Now this breakdown really is designed to fit with their view of colonial core states exercising control over the two latter ones.

This set of terminology could be used. Of course there is a set of connotations with that set as well. Not the least of which is its use by Marxists. Don't get me started: Engels was an idiot- an unscrupulous one at tha. Particularly with his analysis of Manchester England; which has a very unique history. All you have to realize is that nature does not obey linear logic and consequently there are things such as emergent behaviors [Ant colonies are an excellent example] in order to figure out what was going on there.
