Golden Rolls Royce Coupe lands in Middle East
Not content with the boundless luxury exuded by the standard Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe, the sole dealer of the bespoke cars in Abu Dhabi has taken delivery of a unique version decked in a gold metallic paint scheme and finished off with a gold-plated Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament.

Almost certainly built to the exacting specifications of one of the country’s numerous wealthy individuals, the Drophead Coupe is also fitted with a stainless steel bonnet, teak decking and twin coachlines.

I95Speedingticket, I think my comment is pretty legitimate. There is nothing classy or tasteful about this gold paint scheme on the Rolls. Simply said, it is garish. Or look at that chrome 599 Ferrari in Dubai or any of the other custom work done for Middle East customers. Here in Connecticut, if someone drove that Rolls-Royce, they would be laughed at and they would be a pariah.

If you look at what the word "Arab" defines, you will find that a good chunk of the world's population can be classified as being "Arab" (even if the word really doesn't mean much to someone with an education; oh and Muslim does NOT mean Arab).

Furthermore, the word taste defines something that is quite subjective. You may think you have great taste but I could think your taste stinks.

So you are saying that millions and millions of people throughout the world have a taste that is DIFFERENT from yours. CONGRATS!!!!

And I think a gold phantom could find a place in anyone's heart at the right time. Just imagine pulling up in one of those while vacationing up in your summer house in Dubai; the look on your "Arab" friends' faces. When in Rome my friend...

There are certainly cultural/subcultural differences in taste. I was speaking not a few month ago with an individual, a (base-model) 7-series driver, from Kazhaktsan with whom I am acquainted. The subject turned to shopping, he stated that most of his wardrobe is from Saks, while I pointed out my preference for Neiman Marcus. His response, which was a set of words I promise has never and will never pass my lips; Neiman Marcus is "Not Flashy enough."

Ah, but don't go thinking that I am a real cultural relativist, for whatever the effect of a cultures perception of affluence may be, ultimatly purchases are a function of the person's character. They will tell you if the person is attention-seeking, if they desire recognition, or if they value elegance, or refinement.

The Arab states are most certainly not at the "pinnacle of good taste".

I would say their relatively recent wealth has made particular Arab countries/kingdoms (and their citizens) very innovative in terms of design and extravagant in terms of money spent on expensive buildings, toys, etc., but that doesn't make it tasteful.

MORAL OF THE STORY-
Just because it's expensive does not make it tasteful.

It would have been tasteless if it had been gold plated (like that 599 is chrome plated), not painted in a gold-like color. Anyway, this is not the first Rolls painted in this color, and I like it, but I prefer the blue one.
