Great Rebate War of '08: Pickups Fire the First Shot
Even though auto execs are swearing that 2008 won't be a year of big rebates, the economic forecast suggests reality may force their hand before the summer selling season.

In our view, there is going to be a great rebate war in 2008, and as you can see from the list below, pickups have already established a beachhead.

January Rebates for Pickup Trucks:
-- Ford F-150: $2,500 or low APR
-- Chevy Silverado: $3,250 or $1,750 and low APR
-- Dodge Ram: $6,000 or $2,500 and low APR
-- Toyota Tundra: $2,000 or low APR
-- Nissan Titan: $5,000 or low APR
-- GMC Sierra: $2,000 or low APR

duqit -if you boycott the offending car companies they will cave in and introduce rebates. I can't wait for auto makers to start selling vehicles over the Internet at dealer cost plus a nominal commission for a delivering dealer designated by the retail customer.

Auto execs who are resistant to change will introduce all sorts of problems with this and come back with questions that reveal their incompetence in solving problems.

I'm all for profitable enterprise but the existing system lacks full disclosure and involves a negative purchasing experience on the part of the consumer.

Both Lexus and Porsche make it real difficult to find their spiffs -- any dealers/salespeople on this board?

Many firms make it difficult to do business with them -- they have not yet learned that sales success is highly dependent on the degree to which customers find it easy to do business.

Just buy or plan to buy on the last 5 days of the year. You can get great deals then because they want to meet their annual quota. Merc, Bmw and even audi will give as high as $5000 or more depending on model. This is down to the dealer not manufacturer. Already the manufacturers do X-mas sales, so dealers that are struggling with certain models will add more to the manufacturers discount so that they can meet their 4 or 5 star status. If you cannot wait till year end, buy at month's end.

The reason you don't hear about the rebates from Lexus and Porsche is simple. They don't have the same level of competition as the domestic vehicles do.

Most of these vehicles will be incentivised to the dealer not the customer.

Examples- 2008 Lexus RX350 $2000 dealer cash, 2007 Lexus SC430 $3000 delaer cash.

Lexus puts these rebates out there for the dealers so they can short sell the outgoing cars and the manufacturer can sell more cars to the dealer.

When you think about how overpriced these vehicle are, you can visualize all sorts of competition unless you are mesmerized by the brand name.

What do you mean "rip a new one again" Are you talking about Ford ripping off everybody who buys their low quality autos?

PickUps have the "Unlimited Ammo" cheat, on; there's always a rebate to be had with them.

hmmm. I am looking to buy another truck for my business. I would love to get a 07 or 08 Silverado for about $5K off - 2,000 rebates, GM card rebates, and loyalty.

I chat with a guy on an Edmunds Inside Line blog who was thinking of getting an S-Class, but we all got sick of luxury boats so he got a well-equipped Chevy Silverado Double Cab instead. I think that's a very interesting move, and strangely appealing. The rebates only make it nicer.
