HEY! Your 07' $50,000 Truck Is Worth Less Than 20 Grand Wholesale Now. And Even At THAT Price, NOBODY Wants Them!
Unless you've been on safari on the planet Venus, it's next to impossible that you've missed the news that the car business (SUV's/Truck in particular) is REALLY bad right now.
But what you all don't realize is truly HOW BAD it is.
So let us net it out for you.
If you own an SUV or a Truck right now, particularly a full size American piece of iron, YOU are SCREWED!
If you DO you probably don't want to read any further into this article.
Because this is the part where we tell you HOW screwed you really are.
You won't see this on KBB or Edmunds for another 6 months or so because their teams heads are so far up their asses and couldn't spot a trend if it hit them like a 2x4, upside the head.
But that's ok.
If they weren't so brain dead, we wouldn't have a business.
So a sincere thank you from all of us at AutoSpies.com. We TRULY owe you.
Ok, the envelope please....
Agent 001,
Q: HOW BAD is it?
A: My good bud from the old MP3 days, JR, sends me this little email that says...log on to the Manheim auction site and check out the results from last week's Southern California dealer wholesale auction.
He says you just wont believe it.
So I ping back, dude, just looked two weeks ago and it didn't look so bad.
He says, listen to me, you NEED to see this...it's like a black Monday for the wholesale auto industry.
So, I wiggle my fingers on the keyboard and start looking around at the results.
HOLY S _ _ T!!!!!!
Guess what?
That loaded brand new 2007 GMC Sierra pickup or Ford F-150 your friend got the 'great deal on' before the 08's hit....You know, the one that listed for $50G's that they STOLE for $8g's off sticker AND got 0% financing?
The one that only has about 12k miles on it and KBB and Edmunds say is worth $35k wholesale...
As of last week's dealer wholesale auction, those bad boys are worth about $18G's!!!!!!!!!!
WOW!!!!
Your neighbor is not only getting hosed at the pump at 12MPG and with 4 buck gas, now they are $20G's + underwater on that 'Ford Tough' truck.
Sorry to be the bearers of bad news (in this case REALLY bad news) but if we don't show the world what's really happening out there, our ad strangled competitors certainly won't.
And to add insult to injury, it's only going to get worse before the end of the year.
NEWS FLASH: The value of the lifeblood of the American automotive business has SUNK.
As they say... LIKE A ROCK!
But in the words of those high paid auto execs less than 12 months ago, people don't really care about gas prices or even know what MPG they get! ;)
YEAH, Riiigght!
Time to give them another bonus! LOL!

in other parts of the world they have plenty of trucks with smaller diesel engines that get the job done. though pretty soon that will not be enough of an economy either

Forgot to mention that my 2007 Chevy Silverado gets about 20MPG highway. Not bad. About 15MPG city. I would presume that this will also affect the sports car market...to a lesser degree.
The smartest thing about Japanese Auto industry is that they always stuck to making high MPG vehicles and when you think high MPG you typically think Japanese car. US auto companies only within the last 5-10 years focused on high MPG vehicles. Good thing it was not too late. I plan to buy the Chevy Volt when it comes out...can't wait!

Up here in Canada gas costs $1.30 to $1.47 a litre! OUCH! A civic's tank is 50L, and the most that I have ever filled is 47Litres, So do the math, yes even a new civic costs easily $60. to fill,Insane!! now I can understand why these trucks drop in price so radically.

It's just about $100 even to fill my truck up (picture in my profile) but honestly that's not too bad considering it's paid off and besides insurance that's all it costs me to drive. It's also nice having a 25 gallon tank and still getting about 17 MPG in the city as well. It goes quite a while in between fill ups.

For us small business owners these vehichles are our only option. This just means we hold on to these vehicles longer than expected and take the time to keep them in good shape.
We do pay a lot for gas (over $100.00/fill), which we have to pass onto our clients. It's not a good scenario, we all lose in some fashion.

GM will probably save your butt. I hear they have fantastic new economical smaller diesels coming for pickup trucks over the next 2 years. What annoys me is that the auto industry is not disclosing enough information on future models including timelines for introduction. This means that customers are unable to plan ahead properly.

EnnNorak, the auto industry does not disclose future products because they are trying to save their own butts. They are already sitting on a lot of trucks that they can't get rid of.

The story definitely has merit but the people who buy the trucks and actually need them/use them the way trucks are meant to be used (and plan on keeping them for a while) probably don't care. They still NEED the truck for whatever it is they do.

I still think Hummers are stupid because they don't offer any functional advantage over a Tahoe/Land Crusier. They get worse gas mileage, look uglier, don't drive as well and actually have less interior space.

We have screwed ourselves by ignoring warnings as early as the seventies that demand for oil would outstrip production just about now. Incompetent politicians did nothing to avoid the current crisis even though they had decades to plan ahead. All they had to do is add massive taxes at the pump and use the incremental revenue solely for the purpose of improving roads, bridges, and other transportation infrastructures. Now we have even higher pump prices because of the supply and demand situation, our roads and bridges are crumbling, and oil companies are profiting from our misery -- how stupid a public policy have we been implementing?

There's no real proof that current and future oil demand "outstrip" production. No one really knows how much oil is actually available within the earth. There are quite a few untapped regions. The cost of fuel has rising in part because OPEC's Middle Eastern partners have chosen to decrease output this causing an imbalance in the complicated oil system.

Gas prices are up due to, basically, the economy. Not the supply. There's plenty of fuel for everyone, so much so that the government sends millions of barrels of it every month to be stored for an "emergency". Its our economy that sucks, not gas supply.

I can't understand how this poorly written piece can even pass as being credible.
YES. It is true that full-sized SUVs and pick-ups are taking HUGE losses at the auctions. My issue with this article is that it assumes that only American made trucks are the ones suffering.
Anyone with a Manheim login can look at the MMR values of any SUV / Pick-up and will see that values have substantially dropped across the board. I sold a Toyota Tundra that Galves book values at $16,500 for $10,500!!! Given it was a 4x2, it only had 19,000 miles.
The thick-headed, band-wagon style thinking that this story promotes illustrates the blind following that so many of us Americans engage in. Do your research before you decide to be a follower. I do normally like your articles, 001, but this time I say "BOO TO YOU!"

the market is down on all trucks and SUV's, including non-American models, HOWEVER, it's not NEARLY as bad for imports as it is for domestics. Not even close. If you bought a domestic truck or SUV in the past year you're basically stuck in it until it's paid off, and the more expensive it was new the more screwed you are.

Heh... Welcome to european prices guys! 4$ pr gallon?! Come on! Gas-prices haven't been that low in these parts of europe for 15 years! Here you pay around 8$ pr gallon, but it isn't hitting us nearly as hard as in america because of the number of cars pr capita! America has twice the cars per capita of what we have in europe! And on average, an american (like a car in a america, not a chrysler, buick etc) car get around half the mileage of the average european car, so in essence, the rising gas prices will hit you four times as hard as us! And actually, it is even worse than that for you guys "overthere", because we are so "fortunate" that the rising oil prices are forcing the dollar down meaning that the prices increase less relatively here!
But hey, people wouldn't listen when you had the chance, so I guess all the nay sayers who refused to believe that gas prices would ever increase are learning the lesson the hard way now!

Most people really don't need SUVs, but like you said they do come handy in bad weather and boating, especially in Michigan. Actually lately I've been seeing a lot of Mercedes E350 4MATICs, CTS4, STS4, 328xi, G35x, etc. I think people are realizing they can now drive AWD cars as a replacement to their SUVs. On the other hand, I still do see lots of Grand Cherokees and Commanders on the road, but I'm sure it'll die down once people get out of their dirt cheap leases, including me. I spend more money on gas for a Hemi Grand Cherokee than the whole lease payment. Nowadays it just sits on my driveway, only being driven when needed.

Hey, you all better wake up! If you are hoping to "SAVE" money by getting a small, little car, you better think about one thing. Your medical coverage on your car insurance will go UP!!! NOT DOWN. So your big gasoline savings will get eaten up by your insurance payment. Read it and weep guys, there is no getting around it. Also, wait till you start hearing about the load of fatal US car wrecks when a "Smartfortwo" and the "small cars" gets crushed by a larger vehicle. That is the reality, and you need to look at the bigger picture. I'd rather pay some money for fuel and live to see another day after a wreck.

You don't have to buy a smart car to get out of a pickup or a denali. You can buy a small suv or a midsize sedan and still save half the gas with vehicles that are still safe. And any increase in insurance is gonna be way less than the drop in gas difference between an F150 etc and a smart car(although I'd never buy one).

My Forester has HUGE insurance discounts based on it's award winning safety. Also, one of it's discounts is due to it not being aggressive towards other vehicles in an accident. The car saves it's passengers, but not at the expense of the other vehicles occupants.
Since the introduction of the Forester, it has remained one of the safest cars on the road, period.

800over, I concur. My point being is I don't recommend trading in a SUV at a BIG $$$ loss, and trying to jump into "any" small car (I only used Smartfortwo as extreme example). Small cars will be high risk (Not Safe) to drive and the insurance will reflect that fact. Long run, will not really save most folks much money jumping on the "knee jerk" gas panic bandwagon.

i let my kids drive it. they love it. it has a rumbly v8 and a sound system with a sub. i put in some gas money every week. after that, they are on their own.
a couple of weeks ago, 5 people were in it, and were hit by an mdx at a crossing angle at a fairly low speed. result: about 2k in cosmetic damage and about the same to the mdx. mdx hits a low small car, damage is completely different.
a couple of months ago, i traded in my gas sipper for a mid size sedan. now we car take the sedan together, instead of the suv. lost some gas mileage on paper, but in the real world it will work out more evenly.

No, I'M sorry mate.
Run into me head on in ANY one of those and your family can plan a visit to the morgue. Yeah they're safer in a roll over but that's about it. Any kind of collision accident (the most common) and I might bump my knees while you're busy getting out from underneath my truck.
Look at my profile to see what I mean.

OK hypothetical question...not directed at anyone in particular, because I have thought about this for myself.
Here is the scenario: You are driving a large truck/suv/whatever to make you or your family safe. You are in an accident with a normal size car, accord/camry/whatever. The accident is your fault and someone in the other car dies or is seriously injured because of the size of your vehicle. Keep in mind that the accident is YOUR fault, not the other cars. Are you still happy that you have such a big vehicle?
I ask this because my sister-in-law was just in an accident. She was driving a Civic and nobody was hurt, but her car is totalled. She is embaressed as it is, but she would feel horrible if someone would have been hurt.
Thoughts?

vio, you should have thought some more.
if you riding a bicycle and hurt a pedestrian, why would you feel any different?

Two words: accident avoidance.
That's one thing small cars are great at. No, it definitely won't save you every time but then again try not to get yourself into accidents in the first place.

Lets all just walk with no shoes on so if we step on each other toes it wont hurt so bad.

Excuse my callousness, but I'd rather walk out alive whether or not it was my fault. I'll avoid an accident at almost all costs but at the end of the day if it comes to you surviving or me, I'll take the latter EVERY time.

Utahnkid, I don't think you are callous, I think you are smug. Either way, in 99% of acidents your vehicle could be involved in, it is hardly considered safe. My 3 year old would probably think it is really cool though.

size has almost NOTHING to do with occupant safety.
much more important, is DESIGN of the passenger cell, energy absorbing capacity of crush zones, and accident AVOIDANCE capability (manuervability).
there are photos out there, of crash test results. a honda civic (i believe) had the whole front end wiped out, but the passenger cell had NO INTRUSION at all.
a barrier crash AT THE SAME SPEED by a full size pickup, had enuff intrusion that the driver would've suffered SERIOUS INJURY.

Yeah I'm smug because I want to live in an accident. We got some geniuses on here.

ROFL I love it! Bring on electric cars! about damn time.
where's all the hummer h2 lovers at???
the internal combustion engine will soon join the dinosaurs and the lost city of atlantis. in 2050 people will look at gasoline/diesel engines like we look at a coal fired locomotive right now, in a museum.
it's over.

btw, you think this is bad? you ain't seen nothing yet. in Great Britain diesel is $11 a galon. Yes I said eleven dollar per american gallon.
$8 a gallon is coming. 8 years ago oil was $25 a barrell today it's like $135. It will be $150 before summer is over.
that's a 6 times price increase during the last 8 years. Price of gas is lagging behind, it has increased 'only' slighly less then 3 times. it will catch up.
I can't wait for $8 a gallon gas. 'Built Ford Tough' LMAO!!!
My next car will be a Fisker Karma plug in. I'll
