At the Australian Grand Prix last Sunday, Hamilton came in fourth place just behind Jarno Trulli of Toyota. However, after the race, Hamilton was promoted to third place because initial investigation showed that Trulli passed Hamilton under the safety car.

However, after a second investigation by the race stewards, it was found out that both Hamilton and Vodafone McLaren-Mercedes offered misleading evidence, which resulted in the disqualification of Hamilton and the team from the Australian results. The conclusion reached by the stewards was that McLaren had given instructions to Hamilton to permit Trulli pass, divergent from what originally Hamilton and McLaren told FIA.
