Happy birthday, Mercedes-Benz!

It's been a real 125 years, yeah? Although there have been good times and bad, the 125th birthday of Mercedes brings about two things of importance. Today, Benz displayed a sculpture that is suppose to reveal where the brand is headed, in terms of styling.

Even more important, however, was the announcement of new technology. According to Mercedes-Benz, the new battery technology is called "bipolar flat-cell frame," which are li-ion batteries. It uses single battery cell tech that is more compact, cooler and more efficient than what is currently seen in electric cars, writes Autocar.

Although the battery is in development, it should be interesting to see how this pans out. Could this be the technology that brings electric cars another step forward? Time will tell.

Mercedes has marked 125 years since Karl Benz registered the patent for a "vehicle with gas-engine drive" with a new sculpture previewing its future design language and the announcement of a new patent for a breakthrough in battery technology.

At its official 125th anniversary celebrations today (January 29) in Stuttgart, around 1400 guests witnessed the unveiling of the sculpture and the new technology announcement, as well as the start of the firm's attempts to prove the viability of hydrogen as a fuel of the future by sending three B-class F-cells on an around the world trip.
