Has Toyota Finally Got It Right For The Tundra?
Twenty-six summers ago I arrived in San Antonio, Texas. I quickly surmised that the pickup truck was River City residents’ favored mode of transport– preferably with an occupied gun rack. These pickup-driving Hill Country Texans worshiped at the altar of one of two churches: Chevy or Ford. Since those simple days of my youth, the rules of the game have change. That community, so steeped in American pickup truck tradition, is now the production site for the all-new 2007 Tundra. Question: is Toyota’s big rig good enough to pry the keys out of the hands of F150, Silverado, and Ram-loving Americans?

Toyota’s empire is built on low-risk (i.e. bland) styling. If inoffensiveness is an indicator of success, the Tundra is destined for greatness. Critics have correctly observed that the new Toyota looks a lot like the last generation Ford F-Series, with a tri-ovate ‘T’ embossed on the grille. Everything from the front light clusters and aerodynamic-ish hood to the general proportions smack of Dearborn’s influence.

I own a 2000 Tundra. Look is so subjective and while I don't think the front of this new Tundra is a great, but you can't say it's hideous. I use my truck for work and having seen this thing in person, I really like it and plan on replacing mine in a couple years.

I thought the new look of the Tundra was butt ugly but I happen to go to a Sportsman show where they had a new Tundra and a new Silverado. I was pretty impressed with the Tundra its not nearly as bad looking as I thought it would be. I still think the Chevy is a better look but the Tundra is a nice surprise. I did sit in the Tundra and it still does not have as much room as the Silverado so I suspect that Toyota has left room for future improvements.

I read a lot of comments on how the Silverado interior is better than the Tundra but when I compare the two, I just don't agree. Having said that, I think the GMC interior is nice. As far as room is concern, I going for the Crew-Max to replace my truck and my wife's SUV; two for one. That way we can get a car because I miss driving in a car.

If their so reliable why do they have to throw in a 100K warranty? Toyota and Honda don't offer them. Huh? Besides the new Silverado looks terrible, I think GM messed up w/ the look. The Dodge and Ford look much better. The Tundra look is still up for debate.

“Where you live should not decide whether you…” know or whether you don’t know about truck. I guess I better move to the Mid-West to get an education on trucks.
Yeah right, you want Toyota to give the domestics a run for their money. Wink.

I think Toyota has sneaked up on the truck market and attacked it will full force. I test drove a Tundra and that is the truck for me. I like luxury, but also expect a truck to be capable of a truck's reputation. The Tundra delivers all of this and more. It's luxurious (for a truck), technologically advanced, and can handle any truck's responsibility with ease.

That's not an everday situation for the majority of truck buyers. In fact, 10,000 or less pounds are about average and the Tundra is well equipped to handle that. Besides, which kind of truck is the most sold in the U.S.? Oh yeah, it's the 1/2 ton, same as the Tundra.

Well here's what I have to say about your comment to RICEMASTER. Why do you need double that if you only plan on towing 10,000 pounds. It isn't logical. Usually, anything heavier than that is pulled by commercial duty trucks anyway. The Tundra is not a sloth truck. It is the nicest and best looking truck I have ever seen. If you hate it so much, stop telling me about it because I like it.

No, you get the new F-450 to do it.

And the Tundra placed third in a CD comparo. Behind the Titan.

You guys kill me! When comparing trucks, can we all agree to keep it in the same segment. Look is so subjective and just because you think it’s ugly; therefore, it doesn’t do the job. Please do us all a favor and back up with some other choices in the same SEGMENT…also some facts if you have them. Otherwise we all just have to trust you since you’re an expert.

Wow that is one very domesticated looking Toyota Truck, especially with that chrome polished bumper. If you can't pass competition might as well follow, especially in a market where F150 and Dodge is very popular.

I am not loyal to any company! I have owned 3 toyota trucks and have a toyota 4-runner now. The power of this toy is incredible! I don't care that it is UGLY, it is just not something you would take hunting in the middle of nowhere! The off road ability looks pathetic! Actually all the 1/2 ton trucks suck, it is just that this toy is a princess. It is too long, too low, lacks suspension articulation, and the tires are too small! If you were an urban cowboy that would tow there toys around on the highway and never venture off road it would be a fantastic truck.I would go for the new chevy princess myself (and modify it moderatly to increase wheel travel $$$$).When will anyone get it right? Hatemail please! LOL

I'm a Technician at a Toyota dealer, and when I first saw the Tundra in pictures,I thought it was ugly, but believe me pictures don't do this truck justice,it is a very nice truck and the interior is well designed..
(Note:This is the most powerful "gasoline" truck on the market today.)

If it is a pretty truck does that make it a good truck? So if it pretty with a nice interior is that all? Don't get me wrong We all like that. My expectations from a truck are:
good towing, power,OFF ROAD ABILITY!
Off road ability is high when you want a truck to get wood or go fishing or hunting in remote areas without getting stuck everywhere or dammaging your expensive truck.I used to think my 1993 F-250 4x4 was a princess off road stock, That ford is a hummer H-1 compared to this toyota princess! If all you want to do with this is tow on the highway it is the most powerful with the biggest payload, Toyota may as well lower it and exclude the low range because it cant go off road anyways! We will see the ads soon where this toy will race the Baja in suposed stock form with 37 inch tires and huge shocks.Realisticly it will be heavily modified, they may as well all the auto companies do that unfortunatly. I would like to see an off road package that consisted of more than a sticker and shock package.

Its not the most powerful gas truck by any means. The V-10 Ford has 457 lb ft and the Denali comes with a 403 hp 417 lb ft V8. But it doesn't matter the old Tundra still sold with its interior that was alot worse than the F-150.

"truckmen" you're on the right track, the Tundra like most Toyotas now-a-days is built for the metrosexual. You're lucky if there is a slight hint of masculinity to their vehicles. Their commercials say it all "this is bigger than the competition, that makes it better right???" are they catering to complete idiots???

Well I think to the Tundra will never be good enough for the diehard Chevy and Ford fans,no matter if it really is a better truck...Oh and ricemaster the Nissan Titan isn't considered a full size truck,it's the same size as the old Tundra and the old Tundra was also not considered a full size truck!!

All the current half ton trucks need to be engeneered better for off road! Tucking vulnerable parts out of harms way doesn't hinder handling.

Have you ever looked at the Nissan. It measurements are about the same as the F150. Talking like an inch more of less depending on the demision.

I went and looked at the new Tundra.. I was really afraid that the interior would blow away my 05 F150. But I got back in my truck and thought Toyota had nothing on Ford. The silver on the dash looked like I sprayed painted it. The gaps in the console around the shifter base where huge. I didn't think it was even up to Toyotas standards.. Both interiors in the new GM trucks are nicer and seem put together better.
Also from what I have seen the Tundra looks to havea timing belt not a chain. Who wants to to pull anything when you close to this thing needing replacement.. But this truck is better than the old one, but the old one looked better that this one.

Toyota engeneers are on crack! What a POS! Too big, too long, and too low! Where is the off road sticker package?(sarcasm) A toyota corola could out four wheel this! Seriously it would be a close competition! I want a truck with some capabilities! Most you people reading this are car guys and don't understand what a truck is suposed to be! Any real truck should have at least 33inch tires for something this big! How about some more suspension travel! Austintyson some good input! I would take the chev too, not because I am a biased big three guy, but because the big 3 is just better! I drive a toyota too!
