My mom has a Toyota Rav 4 diesel and it actually gets close to 70 mpg. My dad drives a Honda CRV 2.2i-CTDi and it only averages something like 19 mpg at best. Clearly Toyota makes the best diesel engines (and cleanest too).

No, just most fuel efficient SUV, period. Because even if it was only the most fuel efficient "midsize SUV," then it's a given that it would still be more efficient than the large SUVs. Think about it.

They're all SUVs. Or you can classify them as wagons like the insurance industry does.

quote from David989.

"Clearly Toyota makes the best diesel engines (and cleanest too)."

Clearly David has not been keeping up with the latest diesel technologies for light-duty vehicles, because, not only is Toyota not the best, but they trail nearly all manufacturers, save Porche, with regards to diesel technologies. In fact, Toyota is now scrambling to find someone to source out work in order for them to compete with the likes of VW, BMW, Daimler, GM, and Ford for diesel equipped cars; not only for Europe but for the expected, upcoming demand in the U.S.

We will soon see some very fine automobiles powered by diesel engines in the U.S. Toyota nameplates will not be on any of these upcoming diesels because Toyota does not have the technological knowhow to bring emission compliant diesels here.

Nissan is working on a diesel engine that will meet super low emission levels (tier 2, bin 2), which would classify its diesel as an SULEV. VW will have tier 2, bin 5 diesels here in January. Mercedes and BMW before the end of '08. Ford, GM, and Honda by 2009. Dodge, Hyundai, and Nissan--2010. Meanwhile, Toyota is still working out details with Isuzu to start designing emission-compliant engines for them.

Coming soon to the U.S.--Volkswagen Tiquan TDI (2.0 I-4 diesel--small SUV). This vehicle did not make the list because it has not began production, but we should see a gas-powered Tiquan by Spring of '08 and a Tiquan TDI in the Fall of '08. The Tiquan will be the first small SUV diesel to hit America's shores. No urea solution will be required; emission compliant for all fifty states!
