Honda F1 team to use Mercedes-Benz engines

Although hopes were high that Honda will be receiving engines from Ferrari for their beleaguered F1 team, Ferrari’s Stefano, Domenicali dashed whatever hope remaining with a revelation that the chance of a deal with Honda, previously attempted by team boss Ross Brawn, is actually close to nil.



As a result, it now seems that Mercedes-Benz will be the most likely engine provider for the Brackley based F1 team currently known as Honda.

Interesting, and frankly, I am surprised! It appears that Honda/Toyota are great at building solid consumer vehicles, but when it comes to cutting edge performance/technology, Ferrari IS DA BOMB! Way to go Big Red.

F1 is the flagship for speed technology, and it truly separates the best from the rest.

If Ross Brawn is running the team and they have European aerodynamicists and a Mercedes engine, I think they can be a formidable team.

I would rather say Ilmor - British formula one engine manufacturer bought by Mercedes to design and construct engines for formula one under Mercedes logo, Mercedes refinanced and renamed the company. How is that different from how Honda's F1 team did things? For their 2008 team the Team principal was Ross Brawn, Chief Designer was Jörg Zander and the Head of aerodynamics was Loïc Bigois. I would prefer that they do it like in the old days where the cars and engines were all manufactured in their own countries. TurboSpyder, I think Honda has been designing its engines in R&D Tochigi becouse they have engineering know how in this area.

Honda returned to F1 as an engine supplier in 2000 and I believe the only race they won since then was the (wet) 2006 Hungarian grand prix.

What What What!!!!!!!?????? Why not just give up F1? What is the purpose of using a Mercedes engine when the objective was to develop engines in F1, the tech to be used in road cars. Maybe Honda wants to disect and Merc engine for research?

I am not an expert on F1 matter, but I thought your team identity (e.g., Honda, Mercedes, etc.) was based on who manufactured your engine. So a Honda "team" that uses a Mercedes engine does not sound quite right to me. Or, is team identity just based on who provides the funding?

The identity can be broken down into 2 categories, constructor and manufacturer of the engine. For example Force India Ferrari was their own constructor, they made(supplied) the car and Ferrari manufactured the engine. In 2009 they will be Force India Mercedes.
In response to Mikey's comment, Honda have only supplied 1 other team in recent F1.... The now defunkt Super Aguri team. The only other manufacturers supplying engines are Toyota(Williams), Renault(Red Bull), Ferrari(Scuderia Toro Rosso) and the above mentioned Force India.
