Honda to get smaller and greener, 4 hybrids and 2 diesels on the way
Honda seems to be the only major automaker making it through the tough times of high gasoline prices and for the future the Japanese automaker plans to keep doing what its doing - keeping compact and green. Honda plans to offer more hybrid and diesel technology in its future lineup which will also get smaller.

“A smaller minivan could fit into Honda’s future,” Dan Bonawitz, vice president for corporate planning and logistics at American Honda Motor Co., told Automotive News. ”Ultimately, there will be a lot more smaller cars. The U.S. will look a lot more like Europe.”

So far dealers are waiting on the arrive of the redesigned 2009 Honda Fit. A hybrid version of the Fit will arrive in 2011. Of course let’s the five-door hatchback that’s been keeping Honda in the headlines recently. The dedicated-hybrid model will arrive next year as a 2010 model year and will cost below $20,000.

Both of those hybrids will be followed by the...

i am really getting tired of this smaller greener way cars are getting. I read a article about a week ago saying that no matter what we do now, doesn't matter and we are not going to save the planet from global warning...cars are such a small part of the smog and all the carbon in the air, so we shouldn't have to suffer with these goofy golf carts getting put on the roads, exit 13a on the NJT is to blame (jk)...my feelings and thoughts on the gas hikes was that oil companies were just preparing for the future knowing that car companies were coming out with more gas efficient vehicles so the gas demand would be going down...so they jacked up the prices to make up for lossed profit in the future, thats how I feel and maybe I am so wrong but it just don't make sense to me that in a matter of 6 months all of asudden we were on a shortage

The biggest flaw with your argument are the new drivers on the road each year, which increases the demand for fuel.

WTF are you suffering for? Is it that big a deal that you don't drive around in a freaking house?

How about you lose some weight and do us all a favor instead of perpetually whining?

If you don't think the pollution caused by cars isn't such a big deal, then get your a&& outside and start cleaning up automotive waste and see for yourself how much crap cars produce...from tires, to oil filters, to plastic refuse, etc...

Smaller and greener? They already offer nothing over a V6 with under 270ish HP, they have the smallest lineup of any of their competitors. And they are very environmentally friendly with theur ULEV, LEV, and SULEV cars (for those that are unclear, ultra low emissions vehicle, super ultra low, and low.)

It's a good strategy today. Their adherence to this credo is why they are one of the FEW car makers not in the tank this year.

But that said, their credo is why they will fall behind again the next time the market pendulum swings back toward larger and more powerful cars. It will happen as it always has.

wow lol...M35MT it is a given that more people are driving each year, im just saying gas should of went up at a steedy pace not every single day and getting out of control like it did for 4 months straight ...NOZFERATU...I am far from over weight and I drive a 350z which is small...I drive that because I think it is a nice looking car and it has good performance for what it is, no need to get all STUPID and IMMATURE, it was my "opinion"...Im just saying I don't want the industry to leave its beautiful long body lines, smooth and sharp curves, big and aggressive grills...I think its great that companies are working with what they have and making their engines more efficient...I know I am not the only one out there that hates the new trend of cars looking like goofy golf carts...and it is a fact that the ozone is getting destroyed by factories waaaaaaaay worse then from the automobile market and it seems that the govenment thinks these greener and smaller cars are going to save us

Small cars won't save us by themselves...but they are a step in the right direction. I'm not sure why you don't get that?

SMALLERS, LESS WASTE, LESS POLLUTION...it's a very very very simple formula.

There are thousands of parts in a car which, BY THE WAY, are made by factories you state make most of the pollution.

Want to help solve our problem? Consume less, buy less, throw away less.

And as far as goofy golf karts, some of the nicest cars are small cars. They don't have to look like golf karts...but you seem to want to equate small with goofy. It's unusual, IMO of course, that someone who says that thinks a 350Z is a good looking car. To me, it's not.

i guess the argument could be everything helps...I just hope that more manufatures can keep the art in the cars rather then making everyone drive mini cars

Responding to energy prices is a valid product strategy. But it is going to be funny in the coming years as the global warming green fad is recognized for the goofy ass hoax that it is.

People are going to look back on all this "green" BS in the same light as bell-bottoms and free-love in the 1970's, and Cindi Lauper's clothes in the 1980's - framed as an assenine excess of the times.

You could be right, global warming could be a huge hoax. But pollution does definitely exist, and it's not going away without us making changes. So kudos to Honda for doing their part.

Hopeful this will allow them to shift Acura in the opposite direction and offer bigger cars and engines.

They have always been this way so its nothing new for them. However I dont agree with the article about the US being more inline with Europe. IMO I believe that even if the price of gas goes to 7 bucks a gallon very few folks will be driving upscale small cars like they do in Europe. Last time I checked they still sell a good amount of larger BMW's,MB's and Audi's in Europe.

Its great to see more diesels offered as a REAL solution, rather than resource-squandering hybrids.

In England Honda offers a hybrid Civic and a diesel Accord.
The Accord is bigger, safer, faster, yet uses LESS FUEL than the smaller hybrid.
These are from the same manufacturer, so what better comparison can you get!
