Not a very informative or insightful list IMO.

The VW Eos is nothing remarkable for example. The same applies to the MINI Cooper, even if new.

Car and Driver loves the 3-Series and Infiniti, so it is NO SURPRISE that these two are on the list.

Nissan Versa? A few years ago, Car and Driver was bashing the Mitsubishi Lancer and Hyundai whatever economy cars which had a similar power output to the Versa: 122-hp. All of a sudden this car makes the list? What is so significant about this car? Nothing. Nissans are good value, that's nothing new.

The Toyota Camry is nothing revolutionary or significant too. It'll sell well by default, so keep it off the list and put in a car that deserves to be on it.

Because it doesn't innovate in any way, and shouldn't be considered a "hot" car for 2006.

It's just a new Camry.

Does that sound appealing to you?

Will, the Camry is nothing special. A powerful V6 doesn't make the Camry anything worthwhile. It's a boring car for people who are not car nuts and don't care about handling etc.

Which is most people, that's why it sell really well.

"Obviously it does to most Americans. (I feel America-bashing comments coming...)"

No, it doesn't. Most Americans who buy the Camry aren't excited to buy their new car. They just think of it as another car that gets you from A to B-- do you think a car enthusiast would even consider a Camry? In that price range, there's the Mini Cooper S and A3, and if you need more space, the Subaru Legacy, Golf GTI five-door, and the Mazda6, among others.

Or you could just get a used Boxster. (-8

NO MERCEDES, and rightly so, they are launching the new C Class in 2007 and going by current Mercedes standards it will be a POS.

There's no Mercedes because Mercedes hasn't presented anything that great for 2007 models. In fact, they haven't presented anything great at all.

Really?

Please tell me what is so great about the CAMRY then?

It's simply a new car with a more powerful engine and good value for money and general proven reliability that is still boring as hell to drive.

WHAT MAKES THIS CAR SO SPECIAL? Nothing. I see one on the street, and I don't even give it a second glance. It's not a great design for one.

Mercedes has no released anything special? LexusIS350, I know you're incredibly narrow minded and a Lexus worshipper but that comment is just plain ignorant. Does BLUETEC ring a bell? How about the new naturally aspirated 6.2 V8 for the AMG models? I could go on, but the point is that Mercedes has released a lot of SPECIAL things that could well have been contenders for this list.

IMHO, BLUETEC should have made that list. Kick off the Camry and replace that with the E320 CDI Bluetec. At least here you have something REVOLUTIONARY and INNOVATIVE.

I stopped subscribing to Car and Driver many years ago when most of their reviews were so incredibly performance biased. They tore apart SUV's for handling like boats on a track, they ranted on the slow 0-60 times of ECONOMY CARS etc. etc. etc. They don't seem to consider what a car is made for. An SUV ain't for the track and an economy car ain't designed for quick 0-60 times. Car and Driver has lost its appeal to me.

You forgot about the new best car in the world, the S550! But yes, lexusis350 is quite annoying sometimes in that he thinks ToyLex is the best at everything.

BMW530i-
For me, the Camry should be on this list. Why? Because, I actually consider every detail in a car when I'm about to buy it, reguardless of price. You on the other hand say that if it isn't a German car worth over $40,000, then it is boring and doesn't deserve attention. For me, I buy what is the best car to buy, I don't buy for attention. The Camry is probably one of the greatest cars you can get for what you pay. They may not handle well but who in the world said it was a performance car? And to be honest, BLUETEC isn't impressive anymore. The E320 CDI has been out for a while now. This article was based on 2007 models, new for that year.

S4cabriofox-
The S550 is far from being the best car in the world. And the door swings both ways with annoyance. You sit there and defend cars that have horrible reliability, an outrageous price, small engines, etc. simply because it is a German car. Remember when you tried to tell me that Volkswagen was the greatest automobile in the world? That is exactly what I was talking about. So, in my opinion, you are annoying. But BMW530i, I shockingly don't think you're annoying because it seems to me that you actually know what you're talking about and we just explain our different opinons. S4cabriofox blurts out false crap that isn't true (the Volkswagen being the best thing).

You do not know the greatness which makes the popular car which sells most.
A German car maker wants the position of camry and Civic in the US.

Really? Which one?

Audi, BMW and Mercedes and Porsche are all PREMIUM brands in the US. If they were to sell like Camry's or Civic's, they'd start loosing their appeal.

The only German carmaker that fits this bill would be Volkswagen. And even they are a little more upscale than the mainstream Japanese brands.

I don't think that Volkswagens are good cars. My sister had a brand new Jetta and it broke down one month after she bought it. I think that mainstream Japanese brands at least have quality going for them. Some of them even have looks too.
