Hot News: 2011 BMW M5
Work on the new BMW M5 is gathering pace, industry sources have revealed to Autocar. M division is collaborating closely with the team developing the next 5-series, and plans to take the supersaloon fight to Mercedes’s doorstep with an all-new, fifth-generation 550bhp M5 in 2011. Mercedes is currently working on a ground-up redesign of the E63 that will appear in 2009. Read Article

wow!!!!

just curious....being a BMW owner myself (o6 3 series), i was just wondering in the next couple years, when the next wave of new BMW vehicles come out, who is embracing their next design philosophy of the enlarged grille-look like that of the CS concept?

personally, i love it. i cant wait to see what the next-gen bimmers look like!!

The next M5 should jump to 600+. If Diana can offer a kit that changes the internal so that the V10 can pump out 600+ then so can the M division

The front end of that looks kinda previous generation WRX to me. I like M5's and will admit that the current gen 5 series is finalloy starting to grow on me. But I don't really like the kidney grills are awfully big on this illustration.

audi better intoroduce the RS6 "limited edition" quickly.. this thing will obliterate it..

but let me guess.. the RS6 will be launched as a sedan later this year or next as a 09 model. it will gloat that it has 80HP more (albeit in twin turbo form) but for some strange reason, they will retire the car in 2 years. to coincide with the release of the beast which will no doubt obliterate it. It funny, these Quattro guys.. I get it.. but does anybody else?

hmm. The new M5 is only a year old. Audi introduced the new RS6 now. How is it at the end of the life cycle? So the M5 and the RS6 (both new) are now competing against each other. MB goes on sale in 2009. All three are then relatively new and not overlapping in terms of end of cycle. Your hypothesis is null and void.

Viso: E60 M5 was introduced as a 2004 model, so it has definitely been around for longer than a year.

Audi will certainly launch an RS6 sedan with 80 more horsepower than the BMW M5. Audi will then proceed to retiring the RS6 to preserve its residuals and exclusivity. Just like all other Audi RS models, the RS6 will be completely sold out and buyers will not be able to get them new. Audi would expand the number of RS models but it wants to maintain the exclusitivity of the RS moniker whereas Mercedes has been on a plan to dilute the prestige and exclusitivity of their AMG badge as much as possible with the AMG badge now being found on a minivan R-class.

Audi's next generation RS6 will not increase horsepower to 680 or 700. Instead Audi will likely keep a V10 but cut its weight immensely either by dropping the turbos or by doing something else while still keeping output at around the 600 range.

Audi is actually doing this as we speak with the next generation S4. The S4 will use a supercharged V6 instead of the current V8. Horsepower will be the same at around 340-350 but the real difference will be in the weight and balance of the car. The next generation S4 and RS4 will be much lighter than their current versions and the balance will be improved from the use of a smaller engine.

BMW will now start to worry because Audi is slowly adopting BMW's strategy of creating lightweight, better balanced cars instead of heavy, unbalanced cars that rely on horsepower and torque to propel themselves.

I doubt very much they'll be worrying. They'll just up the game and the loop continues. This has been the pattern and is always welcome.

I like both Audi and Beemers so I just always go with the flow and embrace the improvements they both keep making performance and handling wise.

"The next generation S4 and RS4 will be much lighter than their current versions and the balance will be improved from the use of a smaller engine."

I do believe that the next RS4 will be lighter. However I'm not sure it'd be 'much lighter'. Better balance I'm hoping because it'd certainly handle a lot better is what I'd imagine so watch out because it is already doing a great job in this area.

Also, 'smaller engine' with the right combination is also welcome. However we don't know if it is factual that the next RS4 will moving in this direction. I've read lots of speculation. We'd just have to wait and see and look forward to the improvements that they are all making.

Beemz,
You're not serious about believing BMW invented the large grille. How long have you been chained up in the basement?

In hte 90s, Chrysler had it, then Audi recently followed by Caddy/Mitsu etc.

There are cars from atleast 30+ years ago that already had this.

no, i didnt say that i believed they invented it, i said that im glad to see that they're moving towards the approach of larger grilles. now you have to understand me, i dont wanna see a dodge ram grille on the next 3 series, but im pleased with what ive seen/heard so far....

Audi took its grille from its Auto Union Silverarrows of the 30s not Chrysler.

germanut.. please answer a question and confirm one statement.

1) Question: why does audi make "limited edition" S cars.. their cars are no more exclusive than M or AMG cars? and why only in the years that BMW does not have an active car in the market or until they tail end of a model gen?

2) Did i just hear you say "BMW will now start to worry because Audi is slowly adopting BMW's strategy of creating lightweight, better balanced cars instead of heavy, unbalanced cars that rely on horsepower and torque to propel themselves"/.

So confirm that you got either got a brain or a college degree last night or both. Its what everybody has been telling you for over a year.

I like beemers without a doubt. Currently have a touring in the fleet. However, I've had my eyes on Audi's RS models for a bit and would probably purchase two in the near future (Current RS4 & upcoming RS5 depending...).

In regards to Audi moving in the direction of lightening up their vehicles with the combination of better balance and the next generation of AWD, magnetic ride etc. may give this contender an edge. This is all good. It places the manufacturers in a position to consistently up the game for the next competing model.

When it comes to handling a skilled driver in a rear wheel drive car needs to know what he/she's doing on long runs (30+ miles) with many corners to make that run in decent times. However, the same driver in a similar performance vehicle on the same route that knows how to also handle the AWD will probably do significantly better time wise. I know this for a fact having had the experience for the last 41 years.

Performance + handling = Bliss!!!. Having said that I'd have both the Audi and Beemer. They are both great vehicles (specifically the RS4 & M3 IMHO). Also, considering adding a wicked sleeper as well. Either RS6 or M5 Touring as a company hauler.

You see amazinIdiot, the RS cars are limited so you don't find them on every street corner and therefore have their residuals fall through the floor.

Why do you think Audi's RS cars hold their value better than BMW's M and Mercedes' AMG cars. Audi has sold out of every single RS model including the RS4 and RS6. Therefore Audi could produce more RS cars and people would still buy them at a higher price than their BMW M counterparts.

Audi would sell every single RS car they make, but Audi will not dilute an exclusive high-performance division just to see more sales. Audi has enough other regular non -RS models to achieve sales.

Did I just hear you say that I got a college degree or a brain last night because BMW will start to worry...indeed BMW will be worried. Read the reviews of the new A4. The handling is a revelation....

Audi Q7, Q5, soon to be Q3, then an A1 and A7. Audi's product portfolio is rapidly increasing and so are profits.

hahaha. you are a funny loser.. for sure.. selling camrys for a living..
a) residuals are not better than same year BMWs or AMGs.

b)they only sell ou tof the cars becasue they make so few.. a Mini (engineered better than any audi) would sell out if they made 2000 of them. Idiot.

c) CAN YOU TELL EVERY BODY WHAT YOU DO AND WHAT YOU DRIVE> comon.. no shame here.. its ok.. selling camrys aint bad.. its a honest job.. a loser one, but an honest one... hahahahah. Man. You must get a lot of sympathy at the dealership...

its hard for any of those cars to get times that SLOW i mean seriously.....i can promise you it doesnt take 500hp for the M5 to get to 60 in 4.9, and neither does it take 500+hp for the E63 to go to 60 in 4.7, not trashing the RS6 but those times are bogus, the non performance V8 models from BMW, and Mercedes can hit those times

chewychewy - 5/11/2008 2:46:34 PMView My AgentSpace
-1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
again stop comparing times you have seen from an American magazine that USES ROLLOUT (subtract about half a second from the time if you want to compare to times with roll out) and then subtract another couple of seconds for going to 62 miles per hour. And then add a little time for the cars being wagons.

Like I said, an American magazine that tests the RS6 sedan with ROLLOUT to 60 mpg will likely get a time of under 4 seconds.

GermanNutGermanNut - 5/11/2008 12:38:05 AM

What is your point amazinIdiot?

Just because BMW is bigger and more profitable does not make it necessarily better than Audi.

Audi could sell just as many RS cars as BMW sells M, but Audi does not want to kill its residuals the way Mercedes and to a lesser extent BMW have.

Yes, Audi RS models retain their price better than BMW's M and Mercedes' AMG lines.

Audi is on a tear. Profits are soaring, products are coming left and right and sales are flying high.

1 million cars will be sold this year. Incredibly impressive.

you may want to read the AIG lease report on that FACT because i hate to inform you but AUDI in the US is bottom of the pack in resale value, they have horrendous resale values here so on top of them trying to create the whole sold out APPEARENCE by simply not producing enough cars they also dont hold their value, arent reliable, and in many cases are just something else dressed as an Audi.

Audi just leapfrogged BMW for first place in the high-performance exective class with the RS6.

Not only can the BMW M5 not accelerate as fast to 60 mph as the Audi RS6, it can't track as well either. The BMW M5 is also cheaper than Audi's RS6.

Unfortunately for BMW, if they want to stay remotely competitive against the RS6 and E63 AMG they wil be forced to turbocharge the M5.

Look at the RS6 destroy the M5 to 100 km/hr by 1.9 seconds.

I am sure BMW will respond with a better M5, but then Audi will already be well on its way to a much improved new RS6.

The cycle continues and surely BMW will put Audi in second place with the new M5, but not as much as Audi has put the M5 in second place with the current RS6.

Audi is going to put the M5 back in its place in another 6 years when the next RS6 comes out

Puhhlease....amazinIdiot. Audi's RS6 Avant just destroyed BMW's M5 Touring by almost a full 2 seconds to 100 km/hr. The RS6 also dominated the BMW M5 around the track. The Audi RS6 also dominated the BMW M5 in the price category.

There is nothing left to say. Audi's RS6 is clearly a better all-around performer than BMW's M5 and it comes at a higher price too.
