Hot News: BMW 5-Series Hatchback???
An amazing split-boot version of the 5-Series executive is on the cards at BMW, Auto Express can reveal.

The ‘TwinDoor‘ feature, similar to the one seen on the new Skoda Superb, means you can use the car like a saloon or a hatchback for greater practicality. Set to debut on the all-new evolution of the 5-Series, which is due to be launched in 2010, the system is still officially under review, but is understood to be a key element on the next car.

And while the current saloon model’s 520-litre boot means that storage has never been a problem, the versatility created by the hatchback option will add at least 80 litres to its capacity, making it comparable to the X5 SUV.

Mazda didn't invent the hatchback, the first ever hatchback was the Citroën Traction Avant Commerciale from 1954.

I never said they invented the hatch.

I guess you've never seen a Mazda6 Sport hatchback, the sedan BMW is copying.

The Mazda6 hatch is simply the closest thing to it right now.

Saab hatches have been dead over a decade, at least in the US.

Oh wait isn't that an X6? I'm confused are they making cars, suv's, wagons or crossovers? They all run together anymore. Next we will see a hatchbackconvertisuvcross...... Hey BMW I think that might sell why don't you try that one.

"I guess you've never seen a Mazda6 Sport hatchback, the sedan BMW is copying."

Indead i have, and its just one of many hatchbacks we have over here in Europe such as the Renault Laguna and Ford Mondeo. Of course, according to you, BMW would have to be copying a Japanese company...

Perhaps it will work in other markets but for the US, very strange!

Reminds me of the old Saab 9000 5-door (which was a very versatile car by the way). At least with the Saab, the front-drive architecture allowed a flat load floor and lots of room. I think that between the RWD/AWD and all the various 'stuff' BMW stashes in the trunk, the load space will be not that generous.

I moved across county in my dad's Saab and I overloaded it with so much stuff that I wore a tire out when it repeatedly rubbed against the wheel well on the bumps.

I bet that BMW is currently working on a 5 series version more around the lines with the looks of the X6 shape but as a sedan.

Yet another answer to a question that will never be asked by anyone except a BMW exec.

This is like something they'd do on Pimp My Ride.

They're just trying to get ready to compete against the Porsche Panamera, which is a hatchback.
