How Close Will The Next BMW 7-Series Be To The CS Concept? Judge For Yourself.
Now that the real images of the BMW 7-Series have leaked out, it's pretty clear the inspiration for the car was the CS Concept that was unveiled in Shanghai.

For those of you who commented it was hard to tell in the photos what the next 7-Series will look like, we put the concept pics next to the spy photos so you can do the comparisons yourself by paging through the photos.

It's very easy to compare the similarities and the body lines.

You will then be able to approximate how the finished ubersedan will look like.

And to take it one step further, we have included all the rumored specifications the car will supposedly by launched with...

From our article on 11/23/07:

What WILL be radically different though from the current car is the interior dash layout and control center.

Look for the most sophisticated gadgetry, like night vision 3.0, more exterior cameras than cars should be allowed to have that will survey the perimeter plus secure the car and the most amazing radar cruise control on the planet.

We also hear they have teamed up with a 'Levinson-like' company to bring the next generation of audio/video amazement to the luxury set.

Rumors abound about a dual view nav screen (Source: MotorAuthority):

Blaupunkt has now unveiled its own version dubbed ‘Dual View,’ which it co-developed with its parent company, automotive parts supplier Bosch. The first production models are set to appear next year in vehicles from an unnamed European car maker and will utilize a screen measuring 8in across. The screen consists of a backlit LCD and a special mask placed over the liquid crystal layer. The images for the viewing angle from the right and the left are shown at the same time, but are specifically distributed on adjacent pixel columns. Depending on the viewing angle, the mask shows only those pixel columns that make up the right or the left picture, and in the process displays two separate images.

Most in-car entertainment systems are designed to stop any running programs when the vehicle is in motion and only display the image once the vehicle is stationary again. The new Blaupunkt system solves this problem, for the first time allowing passengers to watch uninterrupted film while the driver is free to concentrate on the road and use satellite navigation, which is legal in most countries.

The 7 will also finally get a panoramic roof option ala Mercedes S-Class and the interior material quality will make an Audi A8 look like a Chevy Cavalier.

Well, maybe not that much better but it will be the best in BMW history.

An all new suspension system is being readied and it is supposed to be even more amazing than what's on the market today.

More luxury amenities than humans should be allowed to have are in the mix AND...

The big surprises?

Besides a twin-turbo, 500hp starting base engine?

Will it be the most sophisticated sedan in the world and send the competitors reeling?

Based on what we are seeing and hearing, we are beginning to think so.

actually, a tidbit of info in regards to the Idrive. BMWNA took alot of input from Editors from Car & Driver and I think motortrend about functionality of it .. I cant wait. US debut is slotted for January of 2009. The AWD version is slotted for September of 2009 as a 2010 ...

Hmmm, at first sight, it has a striking look to it. After a while, that wore off and I now think it has an American look to it, specifically Chrysler.

Yeah, not really surprised that YOU would see a Chrysler in the CS. Dolt!

Everything I have heard is that the 7er will be a toned down CS with the new GT version (8 or 9er?) being very similiar to the CS concept. That auto will be the top end at 150K+/-

I think both will be knockouts...and I can't wait to see them in the flesh.

You're not surprised that I would say something like that? Well you should be. Just so you know, BMW is in my top 5 favorite brands. The fact that I think this has Chrysler design characteristcs doesn't come from a bias for Lexus.

A starting engine of 500 biturbo? I doubt it. That would be too expensive for level entry models. Where would you place the V12? Currently the V12 is only at 435 bhp. BMW would have to jump it close to 580 or so. Does not make sense economically unless they plan an M-Version.

Remember a new A8 is in the works as well. So the ante will go up. So, stop with the dumb bias comments Autospies like "that it will be the most sophisticated sedan in the world sending its competitors reeling." Really? Autospies=dumbspies with those type of fanboy comments.

How about this?
http://www.mustang-blogs.com/wp-content/photos/0/i/1970boss302-380x380o.jpg

Amazing, the American Big 3 are all represented in the CS design.

If BMW was smart, they'd keep the CS as is but lose the eye-shadow headlights (unless its a female selling point). I wouldn't hold my breath though, considering they successfully destroyed their previous generation's nice design.

I just question why, if true, the new 7 would be smaller than before. Are they competing with the RL now?

My God Huu, could you be any more ridiculous in your "black helicopter" theory of automotive design.

Pulling images of classic Plymouths et al and squinting your beady eyes to draw the asinine conclusion that BMW would use those reference points for a 21st century design is beyond the help that Lithium could extend to you.

Instead, why don't you simply look back at the BMW 507, M1,3.0CSI,Z8, original 6 series and 7 series to see the design connection of a "shark-like"forward positioned front end and aggressive 'haunches' that defined many early BMW's.

....Then utilize your diminished capacity to project those elements and themes forward in time to an aggressive and elegant extension of a corporate design theme that is part of BMW's DNA.

Good Luck with that.

Excellent post ICON, huu's design correlations are usually laughable at best, as you say the CS puts a modern twist on BMW design themes that have been around for decades. Funny how huu can never see how Lexus have used modern BMW's design themes as inspiration for their cars yet can see a similarity between the Concept CS and these Plymouths, lunacy...

There is again some misinformation in this Autospies article due to insufficient knowledge of automobile technology. So here some true information from germany:

The "dualview" system from Bosch with 8 inch display will not arrive in the new F01 7-series. It will be introduced with the new Mercedes E-class in 2009. The F01 will otherwise get a conventional 10 inch display. This informations were all published in german magazines, so it should be known by german car fans like spy 00x etc. ...

The entry level engine will not be a 500 hp engine. This could deduce every child...in particular in context to all the CO2 discussions in germany and europe.
New engines at start in Oct. 2008 (germany) will be the 750i with 408 hp, the 735i with 306 hp and perhaps a diesel engine (735d, 286 hp). Later we will see a V12 760i with about 520 hp and a bigger diesel engine (there are some rumors of a 3.0 diesel engine with about 400 hp :-0 !). Introduction of a hybrid model is in 2009/2010.

Kind regards

I expect a 730i and 730d to make an appearance somewhere - 745d too perhaps? (4.0 TT I expect)
Don't forget this will have efficient dynamics so will have lower emissions and better mpg than before.

The CS (working title) will be slotted above the new 7 Series. So the car will be a 9 Series. It will be a new car. So we will witness the birth of a new BMW Series! They take 7 years from concept to showfloor, so it might be a 2010 model. Plus two to three years or so from the shown concept to being ready for sale. Something to look forward to!

Hen, Icon,
It's pretty obvious you guys were too afraid to look at the links.

Oh yes, the Oldsmobile F-88 came out a year before the 507. Anything around the rear wheel wells look familiar? Say, like, the wheel well.
http://www.autoweteran.gower.pl/concept/1954_Oldsmobile_F-88.jpg

Never heard of them, but a 1952 Packard Mayfair has the same sides.
