Hyundai Motor raised its share of the United States automobile market above 3 percent for the first time ever.
Its market share came to 3.2 percent in July, up 0.23 percentage points from a month earlier. This is the first time that its share has broken through the 3 percent mark in the U.S. since it advanced into the world's largest auto market with the Pony sedans in 1986.
Hyundai held a 2 percent share in 2001 and 1 percent share in 1999. Combined with its affiliate Kia Motors, Hyundai-Kia claims 4.9 percent.
Hyundai and Kia sold 47,205 and 26,429 units, respectively in the U.S. last month. It is expected that their combined market share will rise above 5 percent in the second half of the year.
