Hyundai Puts BMW and Infiniti on Notice - They WANT YOUR Customers Driving Their Genesis Coupe
We reported last week on the Genesis sedan.  Citing an article published in the August 2008 C&D we stated that perhaps they had gotten it wrong in stating that the Genesis sedan was on par with the Lexus sedans.  Agent 001 chimed in to state that while the Genesis sedan is good, it still wasn't Lexus beating material.  Yet.

Here we have another attempt to go against the big boys, this time Infiniti with the new Genesis Coupe.  Looking very similar to the G37, Hyundai is bringing to market a car that when optioned correctly will have a 310 HP V6 in a rear wheel drive platform priced like a Mustang, but styled and equipped like the more expensive G37.

Hyundai is serious about its move upmarket, and I have to tell you I respect their determination.  As I see it, every time a competitor lobs one over the fence into premium territory, the premium makers must step up their game even further.  That equates into a win win situation that we as the consumer enjoy.  Ten years ago people would have laughed at the thought of a Hyundai capable of accelerating to 60 MPH in 6 seconds or less, but the Genesis sedan has been tested at 5.6 seconds.  Those who doubt I would caution to watch out, Hyundai means business and for their first strike at the premium makers I would say that they at least drew blood.

Time and testing will ultimately be the judge and juror on the Genesis Coupe, but based on pictures and initial tests I would say that they have the makings of a winner on their hands.

Should BMW be worried, their nearest competitor is the 1-Series, and as previously discussed that car can get pretty expensive when you are liberal with the options.  If the G37 was Hyundias target, the biggest competitor to the G37 is the 3-Series coupes, cars which can get very expensive when optioned up.  Options I would say Hyundai is going to include at bargain basement pricing.  Does the Genesis Coupe at least have enough going for it to make Infiniti and BMW sit up and take notice?

I think pieces are at least in play, will this first attempt unseat the reigning champs, probably not, will they at least be put on notice, absolutely.

What do you think?

ThisGenesis Coupeis one hot car... Admit it people. it looks good. Very futuristic, only thing we got futuristic is the G37, in the past we had the SC by lexus which is so out dated. And I'm sure this will be cheaper than the G37, hopefully a lot cheaper! If so they will a winner or a poors man G37...I'll choose this over the Nissan Z.

Pininfarina does a lot of design work for Hyundai these days...and IMHO it shows. Maybe they aren't there yet, but it is refreshing to see a company move forward as fast as they have. I've caught myself several times taking second glances at the Tiburon. Not that there's anything worng with that...

The Genesis coupe wasn't styled by Pininfarina, it was styled in the US by an American. He was also present at the NY auto show too.

This car certainly would succeed, especially for those who love to tune up their cars. Rather than saving up for a BMW, people would buy this just like how they became fans of Scion.
Since this car is only a V6, there should be enough room for people to put all sorts of modifications under the hood. This car really is in the right market at the right time.

...right market at the right time...
This also makes me think that the Genesis Coupe would be a much greater success than the four-door Genesis sedan. (not by price advantage but instead, by comparisons with targeted sales)
Interesting how I thought this car would be a flop, just as I thought GM was going to drop Saturn until recently with their cars imported from Europe.

funny how I got deboosted...'cause what I meant to say was how it might be successful, but not how great of a car it is.
Of course it's not going to be at the level of a BMW 3-series or Lexus IS, but it certainly does have its customers. It's kinda obvious that people who love modifing cars aren't going to spend their money on the IS. I love the IS, but because of that, it sometimes makes me wanna leave it alone. I like the car the way it is...no way am I going to buy the IS for tuning.

I get deboosted every time I say this, but Hyundai simply DOES NOT have what it takes to compete with Lexus, Infiniti, or BMW. Chrysler 300? Yes. Dodge Charger? Yes. Toyota Avalon? Sure, why not? But not Lexus, Infiniti, or BMW.

lol, Infinit decides to fight BMW's "PERFORMANCE" equation in their ideal blend of PERFORMANCE/LUXURY starting in 2002 with the G car and now all of sudden they are tier 1 lmao are you kidding me....The original G had awful interior quality, and refinement in fact it looked alot like this Hyundai...and its 2nd generations biggest advantage is its cheaper for obvious reasons....and now Infiniti is so great that Hyundai couldnt compete with them I fail to see that logic....for the record the Altima, Maxima, G35, G37, and 350z are all about the same price what makes Hyundai different from Nissan in this regard.....to me this is the closest thing in the way of competition for the 4 seat Z car the G37..rear wheel drive relatively cheap, high hp V6 more focus on performance and style than luxury and refinement......they sound like the same car

I don't think Hyundai is trying to compete with premium automakers. They are just trying to make a point that consumers CAN now buy premium cars without premium price.

I agree. Hyundai should focus on their main competitors (Toyota, Honda, Nissan) first.
There is no denying that the Genesis line is a great product though.
They look great and give you good performance for a cheap price.

They both like cheap brands. BMW is a cheap plastic brand for people who like low class cars. The same thing with Hyundai.

I can see your just trying to discount the G37's competitive edge to the 3 series coupe. You want people to think it is closer to the Genesis then the 3-Series. I would say give up the ghost on that one. The G37's quality and performance are on par with the 3 series and way above the Genesis. I suspect that the competition lines in this segment will get blurrier and blurrier and one that BMW will have a hard time building to! BMW is not top dog in this segment, they are only top price and in this case you do not get what you paid for when you can pay so much less for the same or better!

Monty, BMW is not top dog in this segment? What car magazines do you read -- each review of the 3-Series always praises the car. The 3 is also the car Infiniti, Lexus, Audi, Cadillac, etc. want to emulate since it is the benchmark of sport sedans. Plus look at the BMW's sales compared to the competitors. The G35 and G37 are greats cars, but the BMW is that much better (thus the higher price).

Monty,

a) yes, in fact, BMW is the pretty universally recognized top dog in that segment, and

b) how would you know that the Genesis Coupe quality and drive are nowhere near the Infiniti (or anything else for that matter)? You can't, the car isn't even out. You'll get your opportunity to automatically declare the Infiniti "better" soon, until then put the cystal ball and ouija board away.

yeah i agree hyundai is really coming out with quality cars now and for the average buyer who wants to save a couple thousands dollars the genesis is a create buy. but they aren't at the level of other luxury makers because of the intangibles - things you can't really put your finger on but you can feel the difference. I would say mainly Hyundai design still lacks a level of refinement and emotion and their interiors and technology is still a step behind. however its not to say that within a generation or two hyundai will surely be competing with the best

You know, Agent00J, you need to use pictures of the production version of the car instead of the Concept version. And also to the person who was saying about tuning the cars, well, the aftermarket tends to support the Japanese , American and German car companies. There are very few Korean tuners or after market parts.

And The title of this article quite frankly, look, BMW's win races, so do the chassis (350Z) that the G37 is based on on. The Gen Coupe is new vehicle, but Hyundai in general has not been putting the time in to devlopment on the track like Nissan, Toyota's (Lexus div), or BMW has.

We need to be realistic here. Just like people were saying the IS-F would be a M3 killer before the car was ever out, and it turned out to be middle of the road, yet still a beast of a car, wait and see what the deal is with the Gen Coupe.

Pretty dumb response about aftermarket for Korean cars

need to use google a little more often

Hyundai has a large following actually keep hunting

Also the turbo 4 engine is the same one as the EVO X has, so what do you suppose that means for Hyundai? Yeah a lot of parts will or could be shared for the car (fwiw: may not be "exact" 100% but it has some variances)

Let's not forget when Infiniti and Lexus were started, they were little more than warmed over products from their parent companies and they have come a long way now. Maybe Hyundai should have created a new nameplate along with these 2 new cars. If Hyundai is interested in this game, then maybe they should look to the track as you say. I think they should if this is a goal of theirs, to produce these type upper market cars.

Bimmerfan, I agree with the comment "Obviously Hyundai is smoking crack if they think they can lure BMW drivers into their fold".

On the other hand, this may draw the market for those that would like to have a 3 Coupe, or G37, but can't bring themselves to part with (or simply cannot afford) the price tag for either one. I'll sit on the sidelines and watch the numbers, though I am very interested in the demographics that that this will actually pull in.

well I think a G37 buyer would not so much a BMW buyer....the have the same basic concept relatively cheap value oriented rear drive coupe....that is supposed to undercut its "supposed" competition by alot of money with more standard equipment.....so I think they certainly put Infiniti on notice at least

bmwdriver, your head is in the ground. The G37 and 3 Series coupe is cross shopped all the time. The G35 and 3 Series Sedan are cross shopped as well. Infiniti has done a fine job at making the public believe they are of equal caliber vehicles. So much so that when a company like Hyundai releases a new car, they have to tell customer of both BMW and Infiniti that they have a direct competitor. Even the other manufactures see that they are in the same playing field. I for one do not understand why someone would buy a BMW when you can get an Infiniti for less money. IMO all you are paying for is the "B" the "M" and "W" on the trunk nothing more, nothing less!

bmwdrvrbmwdrvr - 6/27/2008 3:23:12 PM
-1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Infinitis are cheaper for a reason a HUGE obvious reason just sit in their interior and you can see why they are cheaper than a 3 series, clk, or A5. Same with every other BMW vs Infiniti.....just because the G cars are priced the same as an altima, maxima, or 350z doesnt make them worthy buying over a BMW, those that want the best will go for the BMW, those wanting a CHEAP in more ways than one alternative to the Altima, and Maxima that is rear wheel drive will flock to the Infiniti store nearest to them otherwise like my most reviews say the BMW is the better car for so many reasons.....but the infiniti is the cheapest and offers the most value which overcome its shortcomings ......lmao...sounds like a Hyundai to me lol

bmwdrvrbmwdrvr - 6/27/2008 3:27:48 PM
-3 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
and whats ironic is why these Infiniti people are so cocky over their Nissan based cars.....as if 6 years of being in production as a 4 seat 350z with the same pricing, same poor interior materials quality, and total lack of refinement in a LUXURY CAR CLASS has given them the clout to say they are to good to be compared to a similar car...oh please....Infiniti is an also ran...its not hard to make a sports car.....it is hard on the other hand to make a Luxury that deftly blends performance and Luxury into a single car and remain the benchmark in a fiercely competitive class, with worthy competition that offer more than a CHEAP PRICE TAG, AND HORSEPOWER...

It amazes me that so many BMW fans come out of the woodwork to claim fowl when a car that is clearly equal in quality, luxury, and performance beats BMW at their own game, especially when Infiniti did it on their first try 6 years ago. So many BMW fans are upset because BMW has been at this game for 20 plus years and here is a struggling/cash strapped auto company that in one swing of the design brush pushes BMW aside at their own game. And that now all the major auto trade magazines, other manufacturers, and the buying public mention the G35/37 and the 3 Series BMW in the same breath. The only ones who don't get it and try to discount them are the BMW fans themselves. All that shows me is the BMW fans ignorance. So much so, that BMWDriver had to post twice to try and prove his point. It is not me saying the cars are equal, it is the public. Just face it, the 3 Series and the G35/37 are in the same class. The M35/45 and 5 series are in the same class. Now, Hyundai is attempting the same thing and will likely take market share away from both Infiniti and BMW and many of the other players. Fear not though, Hyundai will have to establish a separate luxury brand to take any significant market share away.

with one swing huh.....read any review of any infiniti in comparison to a BMW it is voted in because it is cheaper well so is a camry that doesnt make in the same league as a BMW.......Infiniti is a tier 3 brand if that.....while many mags agree that often the BMW is worth the extra money over its infiniti would be competition....do the research or how the end result of a BMW losing to an Infiniti is the BMW would have won but lost in Value.....its a premium product what did you expect......just because Infiniti wants to be where BMW does is.....doesnt make it reality......someone help them desighn a quality product lol please....as the much more expensive 3 series still kills it in the sales department, the 5 series which is more expensive and better than the M also outsells it, and the X3 is the sales leader in its class....where is the EX.......so say its just us enthusiast but the average consumer is paying thousands more for the BETTER product as they are obviously more concerned with getting the best LOL AND NOT THE CHEAPEST....OR THEY WOULD LOOK IN A DIFFERENT CLASS OF CAR....

This new coupe will be great for BMW owners. They can switch to a cheaper car that is on par with a BMW. Infiniti owners won't bother with this. This will be perfect for BMW owners who are already used to low class cars.

First of, I am not oversimplifying. They G35/3series/IS etc are in the same class, period. They are on par in terms of performance/quality/Luxury. The only thing is that Infiniti delivers the same level of refinement/performance and Luxury at far less then BMW.
bmwdrvr, I just read the review of the FX vs the X6 and it seems that Infiniti won hands down. Performance/Luxury were voted better then the X6. Also, the G37 outclassed the 335i coupe in a MT comparison with better performance and a more refined ride (The BMW overheated). BTW, that means you pay $8000 more for the 335i to have the engine overheat on hard performance. That has nothing to do with value my friend. The G37 was just an all around better car. As for the sales numbers, I'll give you the lead in sales only as far as people have a perception that if they spend more money for a BMW they are getting a better product. Perception is not reality in this case. Perception is just stupidity here. The G37 vs 335i coupe is a shining example of that. As far as sales go, no other Luxury brand has increased market share like Infiniti has in the last 8 years, period. And in category that the 3 and 5 series are in, the car right behind them is the G35 and the M35/45. Also, the EX is on sale like 5 months. Too new to make any sales judgment calls. It is a matter of time before people realize they are getting jipped by BMW.

My friend drives the crap out of his 335 and it doesn't overheat. How is that even possible? The fact that you take a problem that has happened to a very small fraction of BMW 335s and apply that to every 335 ever made, suggests to me that you are a fanboy.

You ever listen to the sound that the G37 door makes when you close it? That is all I need to hear to realize why the G37 is cheaper. The G37 is OK but it's still cheapsville. Some people can see it, some people cannot.

^^Same here. Except I drive a G37 coupe, so I don't see myself downgrading.

However, when I bought my first G35 coupe in 2004, with minimal options I got the car for about $33k. My current G37 now costs $41k. So for a fresh college grad with new job and no mortgage payment, this is ideal price range with similar style/performance.

Lets all be honest, the main reason BMW had to bump up performace in the 3 coupe is due to the emergence of the G35 coupe. Infiniti is still chasing BMW, but its good competition for both companies. Now Hyundai is doing the same in chasing Infiniti. Consumers win because great cars come out of it.

Hyundai has nothing to worry about, they'll sell tons of these. Ever since Chung Mong Koo became CEO of Hyundai in 1999, quality control and refinement became an obsession for him and it showed with the introduction of Santa Fe, which was a huge success.

Around that time JD Power also acknowledged that quality has jumped 28%, compared to 14% for remaining manufacturers. Today, all the vehicles from Accent to Veracruz are reliable and well build cars and many critics agree they are a testament of value and quality.

Although I would consider the styling of Genesis coupe to be a little fussy, it looks fresh and "eye catching" to say the least. Even the Tiburon had great styling... looked very muck like a Ferrari inspired design and eye catching as well.

Probably true that people looking at G37s or 1-series will not even look at this car, but I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing, since this one will be a perfect fit for the younger, value conscious shoppers that also want the looks and sportiness of the rwd platform vehicle. Well done Hyundai :)

Hmmm I just got my dream job and I want to get a new car, should I get the BMW or the Hyundai?

LoL

Hyundai has a long way to go before they can be on the same playing as BMW, GET REAL HYUDAI!

I can see a nissan, excuse me, 'infiniti' shopper checking out a loaded up Gen coupe. After all, these shoppers/fans of them seem to only care about bargains and saving money.

This will be perfect for BMW owners. BMW owners are used to cheap plastic crap, so this Hyundai will fit right into their lifestyle.

I don't have cheap plastic crap in my BMW, so not sure which one you have test driven lately...

Don't be so quick to judge, SsangYong Actyon was the inspiration for the X6.

To 1fstmach, you need to read clearly, the Japanese, AM and German tuner markets are way bigger than the Korean, and there is more support. I haven't seen any hooked up Hyundais around my way, but i have seen them in mags, but they aren't the vehicle of choice around my parts for tuning,. One looks at the usually suspects of Evos, Scobies, M3's and IS300's, and the typical Honda, with S2000 sprinkled in. Anybody tuning a Hyundai is routinely laughed at.

As with most people, I don't see anybody trading in their 335i's or G37's or even a 135i for this car, maybe someone tired of the Mustang (could that be you 1fstmach?)

I'm glad Hyundai is optimistic, now they just need to be realistic.

Most BMW buyers will not look at a Hyundai...even if Hyundai is superior in everyway. I'm not saying that Hyundai is superior, I'm saying that most BMW buyers are stuck in thier little world. Face it people... monocle's are not stylish.

Cheers! LOL.

btw, I think the lines are too soft and the body doesn't wear too well on the platform. Not good enough.

It is not hard for Hyundai to beat Infiniti, since Infiniti is just a rebadged Nissan but BMW is way, way beyond their reach.

BMW 135i > .... >.....> Hyundai Genesis > Infiniti G37
