Hyundai RWD Coupe debuting at British Motor Show in July '08
Most of the information on Hyundai’s new RWD coupe is based merely on speculation and a few spy shots, as any official details are incredibly hard to come by. We know that it will be based on a shortened version of the carmaker’s new RWD platform that will debut in the upcoming Genesis sedan. Developers will probably use Hyundai’s 3.8L V6, which develops 260hp and 348Nm of torque in current guises. However, there’s also talk of a smaller 2.0L turbocharged motor in the works. Agree on V8 and wish to advise that a 300 h.p. DOHC V8 luxury sedan (Genesis concept) is expected to arrive soon. Thankfully, it will not have cylinder deactivation.

I want nothing to do with cylinder deactivation. It's a needless complication. Fuel savings are not that great -- "up to" 20% promised by some car manufacturers but only 7% delivered in city driving and 15% claimed on average which I find a bit high. I had a 1981 Cadillac Fleetwood with the infamous 8-6-4 engine which I measured at 24 miles to the imperial gallon on the highway and then disconnected it permanently by simply reaching under the vehicle on my driveway and cutting off the wires from the transmission’s high-pressure sensor. After disconnecting, all 6-cylinder mode vibration was gone and my highway gas mileage was reduced from 24 to 21 miles to the imperial gallon. I was glad to give up the insignificant fuel savings for a smooth-running engine always firing on all 8 cylinders.

I admit that deactivation systems have improved since 1981 but some vibration and emissions issues remain to be fully resolved. Vibration results from pressure differences between the deactivated cylinders and those still experiencing combustion and is particularly noticeable on V6 engines when only 3 cylinders are firing. I am concerned about possible long-term metal fatigue and uneven wear resulting from running the engine block at an uneven temperature with temperature cycling due to some cylinders cutting in an out of the combustion process.

Man, that is one ugly tail. The front is OK, though.

Hiundai needs to work on a HO V6 motor for, if nothing else, the Tiburon which by all accounts is a fantastic little car. Kinda looks like that's where this design is headed and I cant wait to see what comes of it.

Hyundai beats Acura to the V8 game... a Real Shame!

That C-Pillar sure has shades of 2008 Accord 2-door written all over it, but the remaining (over-all) shape looks world's better...

These guy's are seriously on a roll!

BTW... My assessment is based on the more revealing spy shots of the actual vehicle, not these 'shot in the dark' renderings of some city car A-spies chose to accompany this 'news' blurb...

Just thought I'd clarify... NEXT!
