Hyundai Sonata Rust Issues Prompt Federal Probe
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating allegations that the subframe on the Hyundai Sonata can corrode to the point of causing the suspension to fail.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) at NHTSA has received 40 consumer complaints about severe corrosion in the 1999 through 2002 model year Sonatas.

Consumers have reported “fist-sized holes in the frame” that can cause the suspension control arm to detach from the vehicle, according to federal safety investigators.

Rust is more and more of a problem to all nameplates . Some makes are more suspected than others. If you live in the rust belt they are using more and more salt every year. Some time ago they used to salt intersections
, now they salt the entire road and kepp salting it until every last morsel of slush is gone . With all the lawyers looking for work ,all it takes is for one nothead driver get in a wreck and blame the municipality for not keeping the roads free of ice and snow and this person will try to find a liftime supply of money . Ive seen it happen where someone gets in a accident and the salt flows even faster, they even got to the point where they " presalt " the roads in advance of a big snowfall . Most automakers must comply with a 10 year rust warranty , not cosmetic , but to the point where the vehicle strength is waekened and many makes are just squeaking by

What a joke some of you "jerks" are. The cars Hyundai makes now are light years ahead of what was made in the early years. I came out of several Acura TL's since they were introduced. I own an 06 Sonata LX6 and an 06 Azera Limited and they are every bit as good as my TL's. Some of you have your nose up your behind because of badge snobbery. Why not sample before you condemn. Remember when Toyota put out a piece of shit in the beginning. I know because I had the first model Celica and in a year it looked like swiss cheese from rusting rocker arm panels. The first Lexus was a rebadged Camry and pretty crappy at that. Look at the Azera, new Genesis, and other models but take off those blinders first.

Since November 2006 I have been contacted by 25 different people who have all experienced a failure with the right front subframe rusting apart and actually breaking. Approximately 18 people have been settled with, either Hyundai repairing the car or reimbursing for the repair. Most people have been on the eastern have of the United States. I have been working with an attorney building a case for a class action Lawsuit. We are currently looking for anyone who has had this problem and not contacted me. The NHTSA Number PE08029 is an active investigation that report 40 known failures. I am especial interested in anyone from California.

If you own a 1999-2001 Hyundai Sonata I suggest inspecting your subframe for rust. If you are not sure where to look, you should turn your steering wheel all the way to the right. Look where the A-Arm bolts to the frame. You will probably find severe rust. If you do, I would like to hear from you at tntnknbjuno.com Even if it has not failed yet, I suggest taking it to a Hyundai dealer and filing a claim with Hyundai Consumer affairs.

My hope is that Hyundai, who has admitted to a problem by paying for repairs will soon address this obvious safety issue.
