I think Hyundai would be better served in the emerging markets and the US market to make fuel-efficient small to mid-size cars and stay focused on quality.

Going after the luxury segment under Hyundai nameplate seems like a diversion and loss of corporate focus. IMO the R&D should be spent on hybrid designs.

well in their defense the Equus has been a fullsize V8 powered luxury sedan for years.....so its not really like a new decision or anything its always been the most prestigious car they have sold in their home market, also the largest, and most expensive by far

Hyundai can claim to be whatever luxury they want, but the real test is if they can even get Koreans to drop the Germans and drive these cars.

As far as I can tell, N.Americans are the only people who actually buy Hyundai's.

Hyundai is 5th largest automaker (surpassed Nissan, Honda) with 3,961,629 units in 2007. The biggest percentage gain was seen in the Korean market sales up by 7.6 percent to 625,275 units. In NA they sold 467,000 in 2007. They have almost 5000 dealerships in 193 countries. NA market is peanuts.

Interesting. Look at that HUGE rear overhang though.

On the Hyundai Genesis:

What gets me is that it has the same size 4.6L V8 as the Mercury Grand Marquis, a similiar Rear Wheel Drive sedan, the same flat strait across dashboard as Mercury. and th Hyundai is almost $40K. and the V8 is optional on Hyundai. I will say the Hyundai dash is more updated. I think I'd rather buy the Mercury for $15k less. My guess is that Hyundai copied everything from Mercury except the important things like a full size spare tire in the trunk.

Mercuryguy,
I'm with you on that one, the Grand Marq would probably slice this Korean hunk of crap in two and not even scuff up its paintjob.

auto001,
Ask Hyundai to match Japanese prices and take away 0% financing and see how well they sell then. Honda made about 5x the amount of money Hyundai did last year.
Hyundai, like BMW, practically have to give their cars away inorder to get their inventory to move.

All the camouflage sort of makes this car look like a Saturn SL2.

Hyundai has had plans to follow the same plans that Toyota did years ago by making Lexus, and it was a huge payoff for Toyota I don't see why it can't work for Hyundai, they have come a long way with the product that they put out, granted it is not always 100% original, or 100% unique, but nothing seems to be sacred in automotive design anymore.

To the Mercurylover: Yeah your favorite brand is heading deeper and deeper into the pits of going away, and Hyundai did not look at that aging car to get anything for the Genesis sedan, they admitted the cars that they were going for with the car, and that sadly wasn't on the list.

I have been to Korea and have rode in the old school Eqqus it wasn't a bad ride for being outdated as it is.

I am excited in the direction that they are going with the brand, and plus beating everyone with the RWD coupe market uprising that is about to hit is a huge plus.

Lexus doesn't sell anything priced against the Accent. If Hyundai wasnts to stand a chance against Lexus, they need to cut half their lineup and lose the 0% financing.

Hyundai is starting with the Genesis as a whole other "level" to go off of

No where in anything that has been said that the Accent falls into this scheme

Genesis Sedan/Coupe, Veracruz (rumored to move more upscale) are just the begining for Hyundai.

You act like the whole line up is going this way

I will say that the Koreans are coming after the Rear-Wheel drive sedan market very rapidly.

Makes you wonder why Chrysler gave up on the Imperial. Chrysler would have had a hit with a German-Diesel Imerial, or even a dodge cummins Diesel.

The Asian aren't giving up on big Rear wheel drive sedans, why are the big 3 bailing out just at a time for this segment to heat up, despite the oil crisis?
