Even by the standards of battered automakers, Chrysler is in dire shape.

Its sales in December were down a stunning 53 percent, far worse than Ford or General Motors, and analysts say it probably won’t survive the year as an independent company — despite $4 billion in government loans and the possibility of more.

Things were so bad last year that a single Toyota model, the Camry/Solara midsize car, outsold the entire fleet of Chrysler LLC’s passenger cars.

In my opinion, Chrysler as a company is a lost cause. While the 300 and Charger are good cars, and the Jeep brand is pretty good, those vehicles can be assimilated under a GM umbrella.

Chrysler is dead. Jeep will live somewhere. Charger, 300, Challenger - all OK but frankly no one needs a few OK cars right now. If they did why is Ford unable to sell Volvo?

This really needs to happen soon. GM and Ford, and some others, will pick up some additional volume which they badly need. Right now allowing Chrysler to die a slow, but certain death is helping no one.

Chrysler Group is effectively dead. In fact it was already dead when Cerberus bought them. Further Cerberus did not want to put the money into investing in new products.Jim Press from Toyota was sold a bill of goods. Daimler Benz effectively killed Chrysler. Saying this there is no one right now that wants to buy them.So they have to solder on for the moment.Perhaps with the government loans it might be able to function for a while but it hard to see them still here in a yr or 2. There are some good products.The 300 fullsize line,the Dodge full size line and most of Jeep.Certainly enough for another company to Cherry Pick from when auto sales pick up again.
