Insanity? Audi Decides That 580hp In a RS6 Just Isn't Enough, 613hp On It's Way
The Audi RS 6 Avant may be at the forefront of the horsepower race with BMW and Mercedes, but so far none have been delivered yet. Market launch is expected to take place this summer and already rumors have popped up talking of a new RS 6 Avant Plus model.
Dutch AutoTelegraaf now claims that, according to insiders, the current RS 6 Avant will also come in a Plus guise but not until the end of its life cycle, probably sometime in 2011.
The new RS 6 Avant Plus would be able to boast 613 hp from its V10 engine (580 hp in the regular RS 6 Avant).

It dos seem a little insane but doesn't matter how much hp this car gets, what matters is how well it'll be able to put it to the ground. Having to much hp isn't always a good thing..

why does Audi keep producing nose heavy vehicles? and putting rocket engines in their to compensate for this design flaw. Never understood they exaggerate this design flaw by pushing their engines "forward" instead of "backwards". RS4/6 are fantastic cars no doubt, but whats the fascination of making nose heavy cars?

Seems to work pretty well for the current RS4 which not that nose heavy actually.
Besides, with the new platform, that concept is going away.

The reverse seems to work pretty well for Porsche and no one seems to complain too much. The engineers over there seemed to have overcome most of the problems associated with that powertrain arrangement. Why do you think Audi engineers aren't capable of doing the same?

CTS-V has nothing to do with it.
The RS6 already has more HP than the CTS-V.
RS6 Plus was more than likely planned from the beginning.

Alex...Jasaero is correct. If the RS6 Plus was planned from the beginning...why is it a 'Plus'. When you already have gone through a S6 than an RS6 edition. Thr RS is the super elite version of the S6. Thats why its an RS.
The CTS-V has everything to do with it. It currently holds the Nurburgring's fastest production sedan time. That means an american sedan is faster than any German sedan...around the Germans own home course. If that wasn't a slap in the face that the Germans have to respond to...I don't know what is.
Audi realizes with it's AWD system...it will always be heavier than the CTS-V...so how do you beat somthing that will always be lighter than you...more power.
If audi didn't produce a car to attack the CTS-V's time...then BMW or MB would have. Actually both probably will.
Heyhuub

First of, this is a wagon. There is still a sedan on the way, maybe that one will already be enough to beat the CTS-V.
Other then that, Audi produces Plus versions since the Audi S6 Avant Plus from 1996. So Cadillac isn't the reason why Audi decided to make a Plus version.

Uh, no, Spectator.
Read Heyhuub's post. Audi has always had a 'Plus' version of the RS6.
Considering the CTS-V's time was only recorded a few days ago, I find your 'theory' laughable.

The only point I was trying to make is the timing of the announcement of a plus version wasn't planned at this point, but they wanted to answer the CTS-V. Maybe the Plus WAS always planned or a possibility or something, but I doubt they planned to make a final decision on it's existence and spill the beans about this early. The CTS-V time is the reason they set it's coming existence in stone and threw an announcement out there. I highly doubt Audi ALWAYS has a plan for an RS6 Plus near the end of an RS6 run in the future. My interpretation of the story makes is sound like a special last few car run to either help sales or answer some competition with a limited edition run.

I mean, really guys, what's the use. 613HP. Give it the gun a few times and your gas bill goes up $15 for a little fun. This was fine back in the 80's but with oil soaring in price, this is quite irresponsible.
I don't know, maybe all the readers here are just plain rich and don't care about gasoline prices.

I am with you completely on this. 300bhp from 335 is enough to keep to glued to those nice leather seats all year around. Anything above all that its just for showoff and make ur friends and neighbors jealous!

You know BMW995, I understand what you're saying, and a few years ago, I probably would have agreed, but I'm just kind of done with people telling me what is "responsible."
Besides, you don't make sense -- are you saying it is irresponsible that the person who guns the motor is irresponsible because the price of gas is high? That's what it reads like. You probably meant because that person is using gas in an irresponsible manner, right.
But even there, we have a problem. Why was it fine back in the 80s? And are you saying you don't participate in irresponsible behavior behind the wheel? From your screen name, it appears you drive one of Bavaria's finest. I drive one too. I know how easy it is to speed in a Bimmer. When you do, are you being responsible? When you take a trip to the convenience store on a cold engine, are you being responsible?
Responsibility is in the eyes of the beholder. An owner gunning the motor of his uber-powered RS-6 is doing exactly what he bought the car for. What do you think someone with a car like that is going to do? If I had one, I'd be gunning that sumbitch too.

Gooch, it is just a opposite for me...a couple years ago I would have thought this car was cool, but now it seems to me just a pointless design exercise.
I completely agree with 2fast4uu, I want to challenge automakers to stick with about 300hp and see how cheaply they can get us there with whatever technology.
Adequate torque to throttle-steer AND reasonable prices at the pump is what I think more of us want these days.

So you're saying that Ferrari and Lamborghini shouldn't exist? What are you doing bringing up the 335 BMW. It's not like they're going to be selling thousands of RS6 models and as mentioned if you have $100k plus to spend on the car who cares about gas prices.

Audi likes to keep a hefty horsepower cushion above its competition. After all, some drivers prefer balance over mere horsepower advantage. In light of recent news that the new AMG E63 and M5 sedans will have in excess of 550 HP (asuuming that applies to the wagons too), the current 580 HP rating from the RS6 may not be enough to defeat the competition (it is also heavier due to awd). Good move Audi!

yes and no.
Seeing how the "regular" S6 is already so close to the current M5 and beat the E63 at the track (Lap time), the RS6 should do fairly well against them.
Some Euro publications already show the RS6 to beat all of its competition.

By the time we see this RS6 offering from Audi, the competition will have newer and better competing models. I would like to see them produce their RS models at the same speed/timing as AMG offerings from MB. Competition is good for business!

Audi changing to rwd would be detrimental to BMW. Just imagine, a solidly built, performance oriented, sport/luxury car with good driving dynamics and top notch interiors! BMW may have good driving dynamics, but they lead the market in the ugliest exterior/interior combo this side of Bavaria, America and the Far East. I'd say go for it Audi, the initial investment will pay itself off in no time :)

I read somewhere that Audi's reluctance to go RWD is mainly due to those pesky marketing executives, who see Quattro as Audi's big selling point and integral to the identity of the brand. RWD doesn't fit in with 'safe in all conditions' message they've been crafting for years (the marketing execs).
I know for a fact the engineers at the 'RS' division want to make a RWD Audi.
If they did, amazinbimmer wouldn't have anything to whine about, except maybe the size of his manhood.

no runaway from the fact that you are a complete moron, for your information you retard, an Audi is conceived from the beginning as an all wheel drive, then the rear hardware is taken out to make it a front wheel drive, why do u think that both front and all wheel drive have the four(now five) links suspension in the front.
BTW, why is it that BMW still uses that archaic front strut suspension in the front?
