Is It Possible Toyota Knew About 1 Million Truck Recall Earlier Than Previously Stated?

so let me get this straight... as a comment to an article about a 1,000,000 unit recall for Toyota, you say that the Germans need to worry more about their reliability? perhaps Toyota should worry more about safety?

of course it's possible and to calm you down: i guess toyota isn't the only who plays that game.

This is part of a well documented cover up by several managers at Toyota a few years back. These managers were accused of covering up known defects to keep from having a costly recall.

You mean Toyota cover ups somehow never made it to the media...in time! While Consumer Reports kept going about the outstanding Toyota reliability, Toyota cars were in fact unreliable garbage. They continued to sold millions of unreliable POS cars because the American media apparently was busy taking jabs at German cars instead of looking at what the Japanese are building in American factories. It is more than a Toyota cover up...the media is in this too.

What use is now for the customer to know that? Toyota can claim again that they build reliable cars today and that was just a mistake. What a great timing for this to be disclosed..the time when this news are of no importance. How convenient...Toyota.

The fact that Toyota would step to the plate on a vehicle this old shows they are more concerned about safety than any other brand. A ten year old vehicle is a ten year old vehicle and I don't remember when the last time I saw another brand step up to fix something at no charge to the owner ten years later.
And for those of you who are about to say that I don't know anything, I acknowledge that I don't follow other brands as much as I do Toyota.
So this is a challenge to see if there is any proof of other brands doing so. Even five years later.

Good that you state that you only know about Toyota and not other companies, shows signs that you are open that that is the beginning of wisdom. Companies taking car of their products and customers isn't new, just the way it is packaged then spin is. Check out a small sample of various recall just off one sign from the net.

GM has issued a recall for the 1997-2003 Buick Regal GS and the Pontiac Grand Prix GTP equipped with a 3.8 L supercharged engine due to the possibility of a potential oil leak.

DETROIT - General Motors Corp.on Monday said it was recalling more than 2 million vehicles to fix a variety of potential safety defects, most of them on cars and trucks sold in the United States.
In the latest setback for the world's largest automaker, GM said the largest of the safety actions included nearly 1.5 million full-size pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles from the 2003 to 2005 model years with second-row seat belts that may be difficult to properly position across passengers' hips.
GM, said it voluntarily conducted that recall, although it had no reports that the belts caused or contributed to any injuries, and an analysis indicates a very low likelihood of problems occurring.

Dealers will install a fused wiring harness. Owners of the passenger cars included in this campaign will be instructed to return their vehicles to their dealers to have the speed control deactivation switch disconnected as an interim repair. As soon as repair parts are available (expected October 2007), owners will be instructed to return to the dealers for installation of a fused wiring harness. The recall began on August 13, 2007, and mailing completed by September 19, 2007. Owners may contact Ford at 1-888-222-2751.

On certain vehicles equipped with 1.8l turbo, 2.8l v6, or 3.0l engines, a change in the electrical motor components in the fuel pump can lead to an inoperative fuel pump and, ultimately, stoppage of fuel supply to the engine causing it to stall. If fuel flow to the engine is interrupted, the vehicle could stall without warning and thus present a potential risk of crash.

Remedy:
Dealers will install new fuel pumps free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on or about September 28, 2007.

Product recalls are a function of only three things: the cost of the recall versus the cost lawsuits versus the cost/harm to the brand (in terms of future sales). As much as we would all like to think otherwise, its really a business decision, not an emotional one.

Clearly, the potential lawsuits combined with the potential damage to Toyota's brand were significant in this case.

Did Toyota take car of that floormat recall? what about that warning label underneath the visor that needed to be boldface "new" courier font instead of regular courier... I ain't buyin' another Toyota until those major issues are fixed, my wallet has spoken :)
