Is It The Quattro That Makes An Audi Truly Unique?
Buying an Audi sedan without Quattro all wheel-drive is like dating a Swedish brunette. That said, there’s nothing wrong with the right brunette, Bergman movies notwithstanding. And Audi makes and sells plenty of products where only the front wheels are driven, from economy cars to its aufwendig TT. In fact, Audi’s UK website proudly proclaims “a front-wheel-drive car is in principle more controllable and tracks better than conventional rear-wheel drive.” OK then, in advance of the all-new A4 headed our way in '09, let’s have a look at the Audi A4 2.0T and see if we can get past the FWD thing.

Under the guidance of northern Italian designer Walter de’Silva, Audi’s products preserve the straight, clean lines that BMW and Mercedes abandoned in pursuit of Picasso-esque titillations. The A4 maintains the simplicity of form and absence of affectation that has marked this marque’s models for decades. It’s proof positive that Audi understands understatement like Ferrari groks glamor.

it doesnt make them unique, it makes them acceptable. Without it this lower form of engineered cars woudl be a FWD heavy slob. Imagine driving a FWD A8 like the sell in Europe. What a joke. same car be said of the a4 o5 a6. they woudl simply get way (more than they are now) outlclassed by the big guns.

Audi has more than one AWD system. The el-cheapo system is on the A3 yet they still call it a Quattro. As far as I am concerned, only the Quattro with the Torsen center differential is the true Quattro. The true Quattro is unstoppable in the winter even with all season tires instead of snow tires -- been there done that where the blinding storm was so bad that they closed the road behind me. It is the true Quattro that makes an Audi an Audi. As for the A8, another important unique feature is the rust-free aluminum body.

Quattro is definitely one thing that makes Audi unique.

I was so sorry when they dropped the tag-line 'The Art of Engineering' becuase I thought that really nailed the DNA of the company. WTF does 'Never Follow' mean? Audi should ask the McKinsey/Bain/BCG/PWC consultants who came up with 'Never Follow' for their consulting money back.

Between the Quattro and the creative use of aluminium they should definitely position themselves in the 'innovator' quadrant. They should also increase the marketing budget and nail the branding. Of course none of that will matter if the quality is not there.

I am about 1 month away from trading my MB S430 for the refreshed A8L 4.2. So if anybody hates their A8, please tell me now.

nybimmer, haven't you noticed that "Never Follow" isn't even their line any more? It was short-lived. Now it's "Truth in Engineering," which is quite similar to the one you mentioned.

Thanks for pointing that out S4..just goes to show that Audi's marketing and branding efforts are unfocused, confusing, and pathetic. I wonder how long ago their slogan changed?

'Never Follow' made such a (negative) impression on me becuase I thought it was so stupid and meaningless.

"Pathetic?" That's harsh. It seems their marketing team is finally serious--they have a spot in the Super Bowl, and I'm seeing S5 ads all over the Internet.

This is NOT a new B8 2009 A4. This is a 2008 B7 A4.

Hence the shitty review.

The author made it very confusing, but one look at the interior and you can tell this is not the new B8 A4.

amazinBimmer, glad to see you back on here. Happy New Year and are you EVER going to post on the R8 thread you flake?

Almost 1,000,000 vehicles sold worldwide, double that of the fourth place competitor Lexus and Audi's remarkable ascent continues.

Looks like Audi is heading down the wrong track with the FWD just when enthusiasts thought were getting their act together with quality and reliability (I recall the 90's when the purchase of an Audi automatically bought you a ticket to the shop.) I hate to say this but they should start taking notes from Lexus, just look at all the sudden new RWD offerings.

I might add that Lexus is giving up the FWD for a reason, especially in their more sport oriented vehicles. With Audi's logic it seems likey they are backtracking.

The Audi brand is BUILT on the Quattro. Straying away from that base leaves the brand without an identity other than styling.

w209w114, I had 3 Audis in the eighties and they were constantly in the shop for stupid electrical problems. My current leased A6 has no such problems so things have improved dramatically. My only complaint is that Audi's V6 engines are still in the inherently-out-of-balance 90-degree configuration.

Audi always had front drive. Its not like they are just coming up with this. I do agree that they should get rid of front wheel drive. I think that an all-Quattro line-up would be great, or blend some rwd if possible.

"Under the guidance of northern Italian designer Walter de’Silva, Audi’s products preserve the straight, clean lines that BMW and Mercedes abandoned in pursuit of Picasso-esque titillations."

Audi customers appreciate understated elegance, in the same fashion that Lexus customers do (since Lexus was already mentioned twice for some reason).

Also, everyone knows that quattro is a major asset to the appeal of an Audi, and there really should be no shame in that at all. quattro is one of the best AWD systems on the market.

They are showing a B7 A4, and they are also writing about a B7 A4 because of the "tight legroom"

No review about the new B8 2009 A4 says anything remotely close to tight legroom because the legroom is vastly improved in the B8 2009 A4.

The author made it very confusing and the editor even posted about his mistake below the actual article in the blog.

Don't worry when the 2009 Audi A4 review comes out, it will be MUCH better than this.

C-Klasse ist scheisse! the 2008 C still has a cramped interior, its ride is too harsh and the front bumper hangs too low to avoid damage when parking nose-first against a curb or parking lot divider.

Quattro is a bandaid to compensate for 60% of the weight on the front wheels. I would prefer a RWD platform with 50/50 weight distribution with AWD as an option for those who need it, otherwise I do not want the extra weight.

reply to this comment
EnnNorakEnnNorak - 1/2/2008 2:31:55 PM

The relatively small extra weight of a proper AWD system like Quattro is not very significant and makes for an ultimate winter driving machine. I do also like RWD cars however but insist on LSD with RWD for added winter traction. If I were buying the 2008 Cadillac CTS, I would order the RWD version with LSD but only because GM's AWD system on the CTS does not have a Torsen center differential.

He is not addressing the weight but rather the weight distribution that is the most pathetic aspect of an Audi even more than being a direct abomination of a VW.

As long as Audi continues to rely on Quattro their sales will stay low. The 80% of us that do not need AWD are not going to buy it. Audi needs a much better choice of engines, more model specific styling and dump the grille or modify it more per model. Audi styling is good but monotonous. For me it takes alot more than a nice interior to buy a car.

"Audi needs a much better choice of engines"

Huh? Where have you been? Audi offers a total of ten engines throughout the lineup, counting the new RS6. And even if you don't count their S/RS models, they have almost exactly the same number of choices as every competitor.

"more model specific styling"

I'm sorry, but if you can't tell them apart, get glasses.

"dump the grille or modify it more per model"

All S models feature pinstriped grilles, and the RS vehicles have mesh standard. The normal "A" line has the normal grille... which is the same as every other luxury automaker...

"For me it takes alot more than a nice interior to buy a car."

You're right, and it doesn't take a genius to realize they come with a lot more than that.

Audi's Quattro is one of the best in the Industry, and I know that it has kept me on the road in many of the Nor-easters that we have here in New England.

As for the Front drive TT and A4, I'm not sure if they even offer those at the 4 dealerships around my area. Greenwich, Fairfield, Danbury, and Mammaroneck.

Engine choices for the new A4 are pathetic compared to the competition. The 2.0T has too much turbo lag, the 3.2 is a dog compared to the 335i, IS350 or even the C350. To get an A4 that goes takes a 4.2 V8 to do what BMW and Lexus do with 6's with worse mileage and even heavier. Audi sales are pathetic, without the Q7 they would be down for the year. Lose the grille, give us some engines, lower the weight and give us 50/50 weight ditribution and Audi would be a world beater, as it is Audi is a prestige car for the northeast and northwest, the rest of us could not be bothered.

The 2.0 TFSI doens't have any noticable turbo lag and the 3.2 was meant against the 330i and C350 which both have similar outputs.
Their S4 4.2 has been in production since 2002, how long have the IS350 and 335i been?

ElSparquitoElSparquito - 1/3/2008 1:48:34 PM
+3 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Have you even driven the 2.0L? The turbo lag isn't really noticeable at all - it's a pretty good engine mated well w/either the S-Tronic or 6-spd man.

I do agree that the 3.2L isn't the best engine choice (HP/MPG). It seems rather dated in the field of higher output & more efficient V6's - this includes the newer 3.2 w/AVS.

I also think that the weight distribution & overall curb weight need work, too. If I could shave about 500 lbs off the curb weight of my S6 (400 off of the front end), I'd be all grins.

Also, they should have never done away with the Maintenance program - the same type of program that BMW touts now. Those are all the gripes I have.

Great styling inside & out, terrific transmissions, confident Quattro handling, and solid construction are all high points for Audi.

+2 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
I have a 2.0T in my A3 with DSG and there is no noticeable lag at all!

ALSO, the 2009 A4 is NOT going to be available with the 2.0T engine in the US market.

"the 3.2 is a dog compared to the 335i, IS350 or even the C350."

Instead of just looking at the spec sheets and spouting off on horsepower, consider this: the A4 3.2 competes directly with the C350. It makes about 3 less horsepower with 0.3 less liters of displacement. The A4 also weighs significantly less than the new C... although it's larger in every dimension. So, that makes for a quicker car as well as a better ride due to the longer wheelbase.

Also, the new 3.0T engine will make its way into the new S4, which will be competing directly with the BMW 335xi. It will have ~330hp, and should be good for 4.7-5.3 sec 0-60 times.

"Audi sales are pathetic, without the Q7 they would be down for the year."

And? What's your point? Are you saying it's only Audi and the Q7? Where do you think Lexus would be without the RX? BMW wouldn't be the powerhouse it is today without the X5. Why does Mercedes-Benz now has a total of FIVE SUV-type vehicles? BECAUSE IT NEEDS THEM.

Judging from your comments, you have never driven a modern Audi. Go do yourself a favor before making yourself look like an idiot.
