Is Peugeot Planning on a Return To The US Market?
Everyone knows about the Peugeot 4007 and Citroen C-Crosser, two badge-engineered crossovers with French grilles pasted on to Japanese-built Mitsubishi Outlanders. And you've probably heard about talks between Mitsubishi and Peugeot-Citroen PSA, rumored going back to the Geneva motor show in early March. Now I'm hearing the talks may lead to Mitsubishi building the Peugeot 408 in its underused Normal, Illinois, plant. The 408 is the French automaker's next D-segment (midsize) car; a Peugeot 407 is pictured. Read Article

Are you kidding? This looks like a piece of Euro-crap that will be just another number in the sea of bland looking vehicles here in the U.S.

Mitsu should build the 308; not this flamboyant frenchman.

I wish that Peugot and Citroen would both return to North America. They will have a challenge to find dealers during the first few years. I spoke with one former dealer some time ago and he said "never again" citing major administrative headaches in dealing with a French company. The reason I want French cars to return is that French cars have a tradition of making extraordinarily comfortable interiors. The article connects the issue of French cars returning to North America with the war in Iraq -- that's a crock as at least half of Americans themselves don't believe in this war. I agree with M316 that it's a nice-looking car.

It would be awfully hard to get back into the US market. American memories of French cars aren't good (Renault Appliance, anyone?), and besides adding more brands/manufacturers to the market is less likely than the alternative. There are just too many choices already....another brand, unknown to many Americans, would be a hard sell.

French cars are great but relaiability even now stinks. I will see how the Pug with the Mini engine works out. might get the 207 GT turbo.
