Is The New Nissan GT-R Destined To Become Just Another Pointless Exercise?
The GT-R is the blind date everybody’s been telling you about for months: incredible body, second in her class at Harvard, fabulous conversationalist, star athlete. Then you meet her. Yes, she has obvious “assets,” but nobody mentioned the halitosis. She graduated with a B.A. in accounting. She’s a great conversationalist, but her voice sounds like run-flat tires with three-inch sidewalls running over a concrete-aggregate rumble and tar-strip slap. She's an athlete, but a grunting shot-putter, not a Sharapova. In short, the GT-R is SO not a supermodel.

I spent 1,450 miles inside a Nissan GT-R in early April, flying through the deserts of Nevada and central California. I didn't notch 193mph, the GT-R's top speed. But I (or you) could have done so with ease. I decided not to approach this limit to preserve my license. In fact, the Nissan coupe plants itself on the road better than any car I've ever driven.

I read this article several times and still don't know what his point is. He's complaining about run-flat tires, LCD screen that provides tons of racing info... oh, and he is not getting attention from Sharapova.

This guy is pissed probably because he asked for CAMRY for review and instead get a GT-R. The only thing he talks about driving is "steering feel", not even turn-in, balance, or exit. My God! So So So beginner!

Just because TTAC was probably the last one to get a GT-R for review doesn't mean they need to come up w/ such a pointless article. The more I read about them the more I feel their review quality go down a lot in such a short time.

Just another 911 owner that cannot fact the reality, who probably drive it at a CAMRY speed. Lame.....

This buyer is a pesky joker of a man, if you don't like perfection then to he*l with you. Why don't you just give off the car to someone who appreciates the unrivaled driving ability of this awesome piece of driving machine. Quit whining, i bet he is such a lousy enthusiast, that he could not appreciate the mind boggling speed, and fierce corner pulls in high speed bends, pathetic. The guy has just made a mockery of himself by stating that he does not like the GTRs brilliance.

Like the NSX when it came out we are seeing a lot of fanfare about this car. Yes it may hold the lead for now, but typically Nissan and even Acura fail to maintain the lead by updating the car.

My prediction is this car is just a snapshot in time great for now, but destine to fade into the past.

The NSX is important, no doubt. However out of the box it fell behind pretty quickly to the competition and never had the grunt to make its way around a track faster. So as far as setting the benchmark for any length of time it failed miserably.

I personally loved the NSX, but if you make a performance car you need to keep it competitive, not design it and expect it to sell three years later after the competition has passed it by with improvements.

Remember these cars are halo cars and must be kept current.

I don't think its pointless at all despite its shortcomings. Bragging rights, especially in the automotive world, are the equivalent of a Roman Triumph. A stock Nissan that trumps the 911 Turbo is impressive any way you look at it.

That's okay I did the research for you...

http://www.worldcarfans.com/9071219.007/inside-line-tests-nissan-gtr-0-60mph-in-33-sec
Without the launch control, the GT-R still produced an amazing 0 – 60 mph in 4.0 seconds and quarter-mile in 12.6 seconds at 120.6 mph.

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FullTests/articleId=124017?tid=edmunds.il.home.photopanel..1.*

"..Leave the launch control off and the tranny in R mode, and the car is still sick quick. Sixty mph arrives in 4.0 seconds and the quarter-mile disappears in 12.3 seconds at 120.6 mph. All our testing was completed using manual shifting..."

"..It's even quicker than the Porsche 911 Turbo Tiptronic, but not by much. The German hits 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and blasts through the quarter-mile in 11.6 at 118.5 mph."

Porsche killer...yeah okay...for the first 10 or so tries with the launch control...then it's back to 4 sec 0 - 60 times...

"The GT-R’s fiddly “launch mode” for maximum acceleration (meaning turbo spool-up) is also a curiosity. It will amuse those who haven't an ounce of mechanical sensibility who don't mind abusing machinery. Actual GT-R owners will use it a few times to amuse the neighbors, and then will realize that they're still making payments on the $70,000+ appliance they're brutalizing. The reviewer likely already had his final opinion before even sitting in the driver's seat. (a lot like the average autospies poster)

And I'm pretty sure the GT-R was designed with function over form in mind.

It might not win a beauty contest, but who gives a rat's ass. It wasn't designed to and its performance speaks for itself.

I agree about the reviewer (and many autospies posters). But I did have to laugh when I read this "It fascinated me that nobody in Nevada or California noticed the GT-R, other than carwash attendants, 14-year-olds with mullets and every parking valet in Vegas." The 14 year olds with mullets comment put it over the top, that was funny.

But honestly this guy owns a 911 and is being rather defensive about it, but he did point out some things that others may have if they hadn't already decided to like the car (the gages on the Nav screen are cool and everything but how often are you going to use that after the first month?)

bigmotovbigmotov - 5/8/2008 11:59:45 AM
-1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Yeah, it was funny, but that also contradicts every other article I've read about it not getting looks(especially Cali). Just by the tone of his so-called comparison, I'd say, "whatever".

The gages are like most ammenities in cars these days. How often will you actually use most of them?

009- so your one drive is enough to cast judgement on this car's incredible racing history? Your one drive deems it the latest forgettable fad?

Somewhere in Germany (4 boardrooms to be precise), they're wondering how to counter this challenge- and you call it a fading fad? WOW!

In GB (England) an accurate barometer for what REALLY acquires a cult following, the GTR sold on within 16 hours of the counter opening. That's a FAD??

And wondering whether or not this car will succeed where the other Japanese all-stars came up short. Kraut_god - both were eclipsed by there competition in performance after a few short years.

Example the twin turbo Supra was faster than a turbo 911 when it was introduced. However after 5 year even a non turbo 911 cabrio was faster. The turbo Porsche reclaimed its performance back after less than one year.

The NSX never really was faster than the Vette that I can remember, however I could be wrong there. But after the redesign is was far slower than both the Vette and the Porsches it was designed to compete with.

Both of these cars are awesome in their own right, however they failed to live up to the competition.

as a Porsche lover, I am highly impressed by the GTR and what Nissan has accomplished - it's GTR fanboys that i can't stand

Fanboy= someone who will likely never own the car, armchair races it from reading magazines, and then rave incessantly about a car that has been driven by very few people for very few miles.

Agreed. GTR tells the auto buying public what Automakers CAN build and price it affordably. To me the GTR will be the car that changed the playing field because I am sure Nissan could have charged much more if its name was Porsche. Funny thing is the Z06 did the same thing but because it is US made it did not get fan faire it deserved. The Z06 can beat the GTR is 1/4mi but GTR edges it on the tracks and 0-60.

I am obviously a huge Porsche fan so I hope Porsche responds accordingly :)
