Is This Audi's MINI Killer?
Dear 001,

Check out this photo of what could be the Audi's MINI killer, the A1.

Sources tell me there will be a coupe, convertible and maybe even a small SUV-like version, ala clubman.

I think it looks pretty sharp...don't know if it's got what it takes to displace the MINI but it IS nice.

Maybe the curvature of the page in the photo that makes the back end looks so freakishly small

My thoughts exactly, MaindrianPace.

The Mini Cooper is pretty cool and unique, and this A1 is sleek and sexy. Two car with two different design elements for two different types of tastes.
It all comes down to practicality and functionality, but I'm an American...judging small cars isn't my profession. What makes it worse is that we're not even gonna get it, so why bother...

Sleek and sexy??? Are you looking at the same picture I am? The only thing this car is killing is my eyes!

It looks weird, not nice. It does not have the soul like the mini. But it got the Audi badge so guess it will sell.

Wait, how does the Mini have soul if all them Clubman looks now. I miss the true soul and passion from the old Mini's. They were small and fit and cool. They were nimble and were and icon. How can you say the new one's are full of soul and passion if they are fat and "different"?

Yeah, thats right the A1 is going to cause BMW to withdraw the Mini from the market! SHYEAH RIGHT...

I hate it when people use the word KILL in terms of cars. It implies that company A will stop production of a model because company B has launched a better version - which NEVER happens!

Based from what the photo shows it's not going to be a MINI killer. First off the Mini is a very unique niche market. Their built very well and already have a fan base. To have Audi build such a vehicle to go head to head is a long shot. Somebody will buy it but it won't take out the MINI in sales that's for sure. I respect Audi a lot and what they've done over the past few years (Heck I own their #1 car) but to introduce this car will waste their money.

It's pretty ugly I must say. Audi's have very blunt fascias up front with high sides. This thing looks like the front of a regular A4 molded to a small car body, very odd.

I'm a little surprised why they wouldn't just push the back of the TT out and add another set of doors to it.

The mini is cute, or so my girlfriend tells me, it also has a history that gives it a classic look. This car has neither.

Audi is making a mistake with this car. The MINI is a great car at a decent price. Audi will price this car out of reach of the people looking at this niche vehicle. Just look at the A3.

Not necessarily.... people buying the mini or these type of cars are all about gadgets and cool electronics.
I don't think it will kill the Mini, but with the right electronics like the ones shown on the concept it could sell very, very well.

All Audi has to do to kill off the MINI is provide interior ergonomics that won't leave you searching for the nearest chiropractor.

I quickly glanced at other pictures of the A1 concept. That funny rear end in this photo (in a book) is indeed a distortion caused by page curvature. It's definitely a sweet-looking little car. It will give the Mini a run for its money.

Too bad the Audi A1 won't be brought to the U.S. I haven't seen the new VW Polo, which will be sold here. I hope it's as cool as the A1, but I doubt it.

Why is it that whenever a brand releases a new vehicle in a particular segment, this site labels it a potential "killer" to all other vehicles in that segment?

As intelligent people living in a (semi-)capitalist society, we should all know that the car industry is not a zero sum game. Often the release of a newer model results in increased market share for that brand, but rare does it "kill" the competitors.

This type of incendiary verbiage only serves to fan flamewars and make this site even more unreadable than it already is.

this is BUTT ugly.

mini killer.. ?/ from audi?? hahha

audi not capable of building a (non subsidized) competitor to BMW /mini.. becasue of poor engoine technology, fwd orientation and roots, and lack of lightweight engineering. other than that they compete well with other fwd cars like the acura etc.

No way. Plus it's going to take a lot more than that to kill the Mini. As a Merc fan, I have to admit that BMW has a great product out there.
