Is this the next Mercedes-Benz E-Class?
Even though the current Mercedes-Benz E-Class has just gotten a mid cycle refresh, sources tell the Spies that the all new E-Class will debut in 2008 as a 2009 model.

Look for many of the new S-Class features like Distronic Plus, iDrive like controllers, night view assist and maybe even a hybrid version to show up...

The only reason it looks gs like is that they both have those little lights between the headlights. Guess what mercedes has been doing this kinda 4 eyed look for years. I happen to like it.

I would think fans of the most enduring car company would be a little less sensative.

If you really think about it..Mercedes borrowed styling from the Maybach for the S class.. I think it looks more like a smaller s class...which is a hell of a lot better than the current model...I've always loved E classes...the current design just wasn't good looking to me at all. Hell, I like the Camry better

They will probably design it too similar to the current S-Class and not give it any distinction of its own, other than some minor things here and there.

I do enjoy the current E-Class such as the grey E550 4Matic that passed me on the way home.

no, no this is not the new e-class. mercedes is more creative. the past 2 generations of e-class have not been a midsize s-class (style-wise). letsee if that trend continues...

but a 2008 debut could be in store...

Hey, I'm only stating the facts. Don't deboost me for that. In fact, it seems like Mercedes is getting threatened by Lexus. So much they've started designing their vehicles to look like Lexus'. The GL looks like the GX and the E looks like a GS. Next thing you know the S will look like an LS and the SL will look like an SC.

The E-Class is my favourite mid-size sedan, always has been, but won't be if they fit it with those Lexus GS-headlights for the next-gen.

Decider Shrub, you are incorrect. The W210 E Klasse was a solid, well constructed automobile who's only shortcoming were some unreliable electronics in the first few years. When we facelifted the car, these things were for the most part corrected.

I work as a mechanic for Mercedes in München, Germany and I have plenty of experience with these cars.

No. The body is COMPLETELY different. Why do Lexus fans immediately compare one car to another, usually screaming that it copies a particular car with an L on the hood?

Mercedes had the four-headlight look decades before Lexus was even CONCEIVED, as we stated. The GS is the copy- not the other way around. And yes, they did it in purpose. Lexus started so low that they just took an S-Class chasis, tweaked it, and called it the LS400.

The GS without the eighteen-inchers of the hybrid looks bloated and ungainly from some angles. This E photoshop, with all its surface tension and Mercedes design cues, looks much more balanced and more refined.

lexusis350lexusis350 - 2/28/2007 12:26:27 AM
+2 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
True, Mercedes did have the four headlight thing, but they had rings. This one is kind of a parallelogram, just like the GS. I don't always compare cars to Lexus, cars usually try to look like Lexus so I just point it out. By the way, the GS's body isn't bloated at all. I will admit, there are some pictures that make it look like that, but in real life, no way. I drove a GS and it is one of the best cars I have driven.

LOL, Lexus fans are loving this, that's for sure. Yep, looks good no doubt, but credit must be given where credit is due: Lexus beat MB to the punch in the front end design.

To be fair, BMW beat both Lexus and MB to the ugly rear boot design in the 7 series; now both MB S-series and Lexus LS has that weird protruding trunk.

Mercedes actually beat Lexus to the punch in the four light front end i'm sorry. Look at the old Merc models. It was created before Lexus was even thought of. I mean the E-class had four lights before the 98' GS even came out. So your best argument would be the SC in the early 90's. Still the MB came out with it before that time. This is not my opinion, it's just facts so if you deboost me you're just a moron who is hiding from the truth :-P

Yes, Agent63 is correct. The four-lamp design was on Mercedes models LONG before Lexus was even conceived as a brand.

The LS doesn't have the butt, it's just that the taillamp design is uncannily similar to the 5 Series. The S-Class doesn't, either; it has a Maybach-esque design. Love the S.

"Lexus is the benchmark is luxury, quality and sport"
"Lexus created unique identity for themselves"

which bit of that is true? Replace the words "luxury, quality and sport" with "reliability, reliability and reliability" and say "lexus took mercedes' image and made it theirs".

with the reliability thing, don't forget the GS has a worse initial quality rating than the A6 and 5 series. Don't belive me? Go to consumer reports...

What happens when fans of 2 cars I could care less about argue. Hilarity ensues.

http://www.mbusa.com/media/images/main/heritage/history/vehicle/1968-1982_image_11.jpg

1979 Folks.

Here is a similar lexus car in 1979.
http://www.gate54.info/toyota-crown-1979-2.jpg

Just because there is a similarity between 2 new cars doesn't mean that they are stealing from each other. Mercedes has a long history of unique design, and to much pride to ripoff Lexus. The 90's on the other hand was filled with Lexus ripping off Mercedes. Blatent and obvious ripoffs. Thats ok, because these cars are about high class. High class has a certain look in our culture, and those looks will end up being similar from brand to brand.

Hey, nobody said Lexus came out with the 4 headlights FIRST, I certainly did not. What is clear is that this new generation E class looks remarkably similar to the new GS - instead of the 4 oval lights, they have moved to 4 angular lights like the GS has.

I could care less who came first or who came last. Just commenting that the approach to shaping the lights looks like a GS.

So what is it then? The US market has no taste in luxury cars, or that they got tired of overpaying for faulty technology like drive-by-wire or inferior quality? See, here in the US, we don't just buy American cars because they're American. No, we buy what is the best overall value for our hard-earned $$, and in the luxury division it is no longer MB. You can keep your cache or status symbols, we want cars that will run properly, and not feel that we overpayed for a badge. It's not like Lexus uses inferior materials or cuts corners, yet that is all you hear about MB nowadays.

0 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
So you're saying the US market consumers who buy a Lexus are a bunch of cheap bastards who can't afford a European luxury sedan? It's all marketing buddy and word of mouth. Quality is not inferior it's subjective. Obviously the US market will think Lexus is superior. Why? because the Lexus brand was marketed heavily in the US market. To the German's a Cadillac isn't all that great, but to North American's they are luxurious. So if they think Cadillac is luxurious, obviously they'll believe the Lexus brand is great. You are obviously basing your judgment on what you've heard or read not what you've seen or felt.

Before you call Mercedes inferior go take at their cars at a dealership. Might as well go look at Audi and BMW's as well.

Just before you talk down on Mercedes remember who tried to imitate woo and who innovated what (abs brakes, 3 point seat belts, sat-nav). Just keep in mind the technology i mentioned was first fitted on a BENZ not a LEXUS.
