Is this the world's best diesel? AutoCar thinks so.
Man, is BMW ever on a roll.

The new 3-Series coupes and convertibles are on fire and the new 1-Series USA launch is around the corner.

And if you haven't already read our opinion of the 128i and 135i...Well-suffice to say, they're going to rock the competition like they've never been rocked before.

Now AutoCar magazine has called the BMW 123d, the world's best diesel.

Plans are not there right now for the 123d to make it to the USA, but we sure hope maybe a year from today, BMW comes to their senses and green light's this thing for us!

You mean the 135 will be copied by Lexus, Infinti, Audi, Acura, etc...

wouldn't that be the S3?

yes 001, but they will make it better, more reliable, with much better interior(looks&quality), same or better handling, same or almost the same power - but $10,000 cheaper.

Just take a look a the 335i vs G37 .. 10k difference, with already 3 BIG reviews saying the bimmer is completely matched by G37 in any way you spin it.

ThierryHenry14: you are right, Audi has a match for this bimmer for a long time. Actually, Audi was the first to have this segment, BMW just started it NOW.

In other words: BMW copied Audi. In their unique way of course: plenty of power, cheap interior, super expensive cars.

335i is a nice car, but this half brother is just a cheap BMW mistaking it's own purpose: it's not cheap at all, it's only a few thousands cheaper than the mighty 335i. Why spend so much and not get the real deal for a few more bucks?

Although I'm a big fan of the Infiniti product line and the value they give for the money, I've driven both and to my taste the 3-Series blows it away on everything but price/reliability.

I hope Lexus and others do copy it and sell it for a lot less because I have no time for BMW. Its a company that treats the Canadian consumer unfairly as illustrated by the following example.

The U.S.$37K X3 3.0si sells for C$51K in Canada even though Canadian currency is worth a little more now. To make matters worse, BMW offers the X3 in 2 versions in Canada, one is the X3 3.0 si mentioned above and the other is a slightly cheaper version at C$45K called the X3 3.0i. To justify the slightly cheaper price, BMW has left off a bunch of goodies like power front seats and xenon lights but insults us by deliberately detuning the engine to deliver a lot less power. The 215 hp X3 3.0i and the 260 hp X3 3.0si have virtually the same DOHC I6 engine with the same displacement, bore, stroke, compression ratio, and magnesium/aluminum block with silicon-impregnated cylinder liners inserted.

It's pure blackmail marketing as it is the equivalent of telling a customer that he must pay more for a slightly higher model in order to avoid having his engine detuned from 260 hp to 215 hp.

The 1 series with diesel will be sold in Canada and I hope this puny little car is a complete flop unless BMW prices it fairly here.

BTW, if the X3 were priced fairly in Canada, I would consider it as a candidate for the small SUV my wife wants, in spite of former BMW owners warning us that BMW repair costs are way out of line.

Because the issue is not out in the USA yet...only Europe.

Any European readers had a read of it yet that could post some details?

It’s the engine that has us the most excited, however. When a small-capacity diesel can muster over 200bhp and break the 100bhp-per-litre mark, even the most ardent petrophile has to take notice.

A petrol engine. No matter what, diesel will always be diesel. I would have a 125i over this anyday.

i'd hope a 2 year old boxer would cost much less. it should have all its shots, and be housebroken as well.

It's Boxster. I don't think the 123d will be priced below the 128i. I thought the 123d is priced between the 128i and the 135i in Europe.

Is the 135i out yet in the UK? Are there any reviews from owners? I keep reading that there are serious concerns about understeering, with the rear sway bar been much smaller than the 335i that's causing it.

Or the A8 4.2TDI, or the E420 CDI, or the 535d, or the A6 3.0TDI... I don't think anyone can say what the "best" diesel is, actually.

The A8 4.2 TDI doesn't meassure up to the BMW inline-6 diesels of now... And I've driven an E420 CDI numerous times (not that I'm proud of it, but I have) and it is a bit crude aswell... As of now, the x35d IS the best diesel-engine in the world. The 123d is probably just as refined and silent (for a diesel), but it lags the final grunt of an x35d! I've driven a 335cd and it was awesome. It almost kept up with a 335i (E90) from a standing start, and as soon as you got above 50 kph, the 335d just blew away that puney gasoline engine! I'd still rather have the 335i, but that's just because I'm me and I still think diesels are only driven by family dads in station wagons.

BMW is the best engine builder. Twin Garett turbo's, peak hp at 4400 rpm (that's very good for a diesel engine), smoothess...

i love it!

BMW is the most overrated car in the world. It’s also overpriced. When you read some tests, you think that it’s a fanatastic car. BUT NO. When you test drive it, your’re most of times deceived. And you ask yourself why some people praise this car all time ? Readers be careful when your read a BMW test and compaision. You can be sure that it wins always. But test in your self and you see the reality is something else. For the moment BMW is à la mode.
