A letter of intent has been signed for Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz's AMG to form a technical partnership. This is a huge development, especially for an automaker like Aston Martin who is one of the few properly independent marques on the planet right now.

As an Aston Martin fan, it also strikes a bit of fear into my heart. Simple reason: Mercedes-Benz AMG has said previously that V12s will NOT live forever. And when V12s are so iconic to the Aston Martin brand, it's a bit worrisome.

According to a quote from Auto Express, Aston Martin's Product Development Director, Ian Minards, "We have selected AMG specifically as the basis for this powertrain development process. Aston Martin sources cutting edge technology from key suppliers around the globe and the opportunity to include content from Mercedes-AMG GmbH in our next generation sports cars is, clearly, good news.”

The good news is this, though. The current crop of Aston V8 and V12s are sourced from Ford as part of an agreement that was recently extended for five years.

So, it's not all doom and gloom. Just yet.
