It's official - Americans are too fat to drive
Americans - like their cars - are getting heavier every year. Unfortunately, it seems the tested passenger capacities of the cars they drive are not keeping up. Two-seaters like the Mazda MX-5 and the Chevy Corvette aren’t rated to carry two 200lb (91kg) adults - and some, like the Cadillac XLR are just barely rated to carry an average American couple, reports USA Today.

Not really too suprising because gas stations seem to make their money selling junk food instesd of gasoline . The gas is burned up while the calories are added to ones overall diameter and the cycle keeps repeating itself with every filllup

I'm 6'1", but I weigh like 170 pounds/12 stone...210 is a lot, 15 stone.
And just to say, you are officially overweight with a BMI of 26.
(regular weight is 18.5-25, over weight 25-30, obese 30+)
I have this hilarious image of 2 people getting into an MX-5 and it just collapsing...

Woah, I read the article...I weigh only 7 pounds more than the average American woman...and I'm a 6 foot man!
I weigh 20 pounds less than the average American man!!
I had no idea America had got this fat...

04CTSVforme I empathise with you. I'm 6'2" and 205lbs. Of course I run a sub 7 min mile and placed 3rd in my last triathlon.
I believe that data can be viewed any way you wish. This same data had me being overweight when I entered the Marine Corps many years ago.
Some of us come from ancestory that moves us twards becoming big (my family is Scottish for example) So for car companies to call an average man 150lbs is laughable especially US companies. Maybe in Japan (where alot of the cars are built and designed) an average man is 5'6" and weighs 150lbs but most people in the US are not of Japanese heritage. As long as you excersize and stay in shape you can be 5'9"/200lbs and be healthy(look at pro running backs). Weight by hight indexing is inheretnly flawed. Skin testing is a closer number however it is flawed as it measures skin from certain areas of the body where most people deposit fat...however not all. I've seen people who carry weight in their lower legs and calves that never have been considered overweight by the skin pinch test because it's not under the arm, on the hip or on the neck.
That being said, yes there are alot of people who suffer from weeble wobble syndrome in our country which can be attributed alot to our work schedule. Most American families have both parents working which leaves very little time for doing activities outside of work...such as cooking healthy meals or finding time to excercise. As our work week gets longer and harder...we will see an increase in Americas waist band.
To show you how much time we Americans have here is my average work day.
Wake up 4:30am
Get ready take care of baby, wife and I leave the house at 6:00am (have to get into traffic)
I get to the office at 8:00 (that's not a typo)
I have work all day long till 4:30 (I eat in my office most of the time)
I leave and we get home around 6:30pm
At which point I immediatly change and excercise until 7:30
I take a shower and feed the baby 8:00pm
We put the baby down around 8:30pm
We then start making dinner and eat around 9:00pm
After eating we immediatly pass out at 9:30pm
(we wake up in the middle of the night to feed the baby but not everyone has a baby so I didn't add that lack of sleep part)
So unfortunatly there is no time in my day to take a siesta, cook a big meal...and actually digest it, spend time with my family, and relax. If I didn't excercise, I would weigh a ton.
And my life isn't that much different from alot of Americans. It is probably alot easier than those who have to work 2 jobs (which I have done) so imagine the amount of time you would have to cook good food and excersize. Then tell me why Americans are so fat.
It's not because we are lazy, actually its the exact opposite, it's because we are overworked.
No excuse...just a reality.
Also instead of focusing so much time on weight car companies...you might want to spend some time on hieght. It is damn near

BMI is just off... Its just a means indicator... I am 1.89 cm and weigh 106 kg. But I only have a 8% bodyfat. I do not believe I am overweight, no matter what BMI says, which by the way is at 27.5.
But that just goes to show how American autos are flawed by design...

If you are very muscular BMI does not take that extra muscle mass into account, it just generalizes mass/weight to height.

When auto makers conclude the maximum passenger weight capacity, they are conservative. Therefor an increase of wieght could be substantial. The average american man weighs 197, american woman 163, thats still within rating of 200 lb. corvette, Get it right, Americans maybe food lovers, more so than the euro wanks, but we're not too fat to drive!

Good. Let all these fatasses realize how disgusting and unhealthy they are and maybe it will give them an incentive to lose weight. Less weight = more fun in life (ie: driving fun cars)

Ugh. This is just embarrassing. It seems as if my son and most of his friends are pretty athletic, though, so perhaps we will see a thinner generation soon.

Not all of us are fat-ass, donut-munching douchebags. We dont all like Nascar and country music either.
I'm 5'9" and 140lbs. The smaller the car, the better. High-bolstered tight sport seats are the best. I love how the LR3 has tight seats but is a big SUV. One thing the Brits got right ;)
