Jaguar's M5 rival caught testing in US
If Jaguar is serious about pitting its XF saloon against the BMW 5-series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, it will have to expand its lineup beyond the current handful of models.

Jaguar currently has two gaping holes in its XF range, an entry-level model to rival the 2.0L diesel BMW 5-series and Audi A6 in Europe, and a performance flagship to compete with the likes of the RS6, E63 and M5.

Have you driven the current XF, o pompous one? If you had, you wouldn't be laughing.

THe XFR will raise the bar in this segment even higher, love the styling, looks very expensive...

The M5 is a VERY hard vehicle to compete with. It is one of the best vehicles I have ever driven, yes I have driven it on a track. (autobahn country club, joliet, IL)
But, The XF is a very nice vehicle, I just dont know if it will be able to compete at the 'M' or 'AMG' level. I am sure the HP can get up there fine since the head designers left astom martin for jaguar, but the handling is the issue.

The XF has already beaten the 5 series in handling in several reviews. Posting better numbers in nearly every category. Handling is not an issue with this car. No one knows yet if the XFR will be able to beat the M5 and E Class AMG models in handling but let's not count them out so soon.

When will Jag also throw a vehicle into the 3 series category. Something that is legitimately competitive. Talk about a big hole, there is one right there.

Jaguar has one- it called the X-type, and is such a spectacular piece of junk and abomination that it is no longer sold in the U.S.

I found an article a few years back that was written at the time the X-type was coming out, and it stated Jaguar owners would not tolerate a cheap Jag. They were right- the S-type was forgivable as the baby Jag, but the X-type was not. The X-type did read damage to Jaguar.

There are no plans to replace the X-type and Jaguar intends to move up-market. Eventually, it appears, the cheapest Jag will be the F-type coupe (or whatever they name it) which I have read will start around $40,000. That does represent a decrease, at the moment, of the entry into a Jaguar in the United States though.

well the X-Type was doomed from the start, because of the platform, no matter how many other companies do it people just couldnt see a Jaguar based on a Ford, coupled with its horrible reliability, and dynamics that couldnt match the competition at a high asking price it just made no sense, it was a poor attempt on Ford's part of an entry level luxury car.......I honestly feel if the X-Type would have been a strong effort from the start, Rear wheel drive, a nice interior, and great dynamics, and styling it wouldnt have failed...it just wasnt a good car cheap Jaguar or not

I agree. Jaguar needs another x-type with RWD, new styling direction, at least a 6 speed auto, optional AWD, and an inline 6. They are suposedly in talks with MB so maybe they could use the C Class platform.

or maybe they can make a smaller, cheaper version of the XF platform.

Jaguar word and M/AMG letters shouldn't be mentioned in the same article.

I'm excited to see what they can come out with. M5 rival means more competition and more options when buying a high performance sedan!

I love the XF look. Don't hate on Jaguar based on the past. Judge them from 2008 and beyond.
