Japanese Fail To Make It To The Starting Line In The Forbes Fastest Zero-60 List
Timing cars as they sprint from zero-to-60 mph is a slippery business, literally and figuratively.
Though car makers such as Porsche, Chevrolet and Lamborghini sell autos boasting under-four-second zero-to-60 times, some say it's not as simple as putting the pedal to the metal. That's because often the world's most powerful cars have more horsepower than their tires can handle.
Picture this: If a driver simply floors the gas from a standing start, he will probably smoke the tires and skid in place. Either that, or traction control will intervene by slowing the engine and applying the brakes, until the tires stop skidding. The car will stutter-step until the tires get a grip on the road.

Well when the LF-A comes out it will be the best in class like every Lexus. Must I remind you people that the IS350 handles better and is faster than the 335i and G37? The GS450h can hang with an M5 and get's better fuel economy. The LS, no contest. Best in class. If we use this logic, the LF-A is going to easily be the best here.

Isn't it a given that they don't hang in this class? My question is why bring it up and smear it in someone's face?
Let me guess, because it gives this site yet another opportunity to relish in their European fanboyness by spitting in Japan's face. This tactic is old and downright wrong. Nowhere in the actual Forbes article does it say anything about the Japanese, and yet Agent009 picked up on that and transferred it to his own site where he is already aware of sensitivity issues surrounding Japanese vs European brawls. He wanted the type of flame war that this has now turned into, which is sad.

david989- Bugatti would smoke your Skyline no contest. The 1000hp skylines your are referring to are extremely rare Frankensteins and never were stock as these cars are. Even if modified to that level the street ability would be marginal. More like a 454 cubic inch Chevy Vega.
Same goes for the Supra
Although the Skyline and Supra are mythical in reputation, they are closer to Pokeman than Hercules.
This is a category where the Japanese either can't compete or choose not to.

"Riceboys" Bimmermike, I didnt think I'd hear that out of you.
Yes the Bugatti is faster than a 1000 HP Skyline or Supra. Although, these exotics often do fall apart quickly. Lambo's and Ferrari's material integrity decays (as you would think it would, they dont have experience in this aspect of automotive manufacturing). So the comment was irrelevant regarding a modified car.
009 brought Japan into the article, so I'll comment. The Supra/Skyline/RX-7 are the most tuner-capable cars on the planet, w/o wasting 500k on a name. True performance has no name. Only results.
(By the way 009, if this is your website you should try and be more objective in your comments, it makes you look severly irresponsible otherwise).
These exotics are incredible, beautiful cars. There is no need to bring "rice" into this thread.
Also, the LF-A does not exist, so david, keep it out of your comments until it can prove itself.

M35MT- Thanks for attempting to watch my back there, but the titles are worded to garner commentary, rebuttal, boasting and maybe even (dare I say) fear to the insecure.
There is no question that in almost every single top 10 list the Japanese will be represented in full force. This is by no accident and they deserve to be there.
However before anyone can claim the total domination of the industry by engineering or economic prowess. We must look at all facets.
Many of our more devout cultists...... err fans… claim that they are dominating in every arena. However they tend to over look some of the most basic benchmarks. This top 10 list surmised the fact that they may still have a way to go. Coincidentally if there was a top 10 list for braking I think we might have another list absent of the “land of the rising sun as well”.
IMHO- there are no real losers but there are plenty of merits for all of these brands and those who overlook that tend to have tunnel vision. Unfortunately they are the ones who miss out the most.

Well congratulations Agent009. Kudos to you for putting the Japanese auto market in its place. You really showed them losers...
The Japanese have had plenty of time to enter the supercar arena, and they did, and will continue to. No, not in the same full-force way Europe has, but I agree that fundamentally Japan vs. Europe are two distinct automotive cultures. Why isn't the Acura NSX given its due credit here on this site? Because it is deftly anti-Japanese; your headline is merely more hard evidence. There aren't even that many Japanese automakers to begin with, so why is anyone expecting them to produce as many supercars as all of Europe? One small island country to a whole region?
You so-called "enthusiasts" should really brush up on other automotive cultures besides the one you would sacrifice your children for. Mazda RX-7, Toyota Supra, Mitsu 3000GT, Acura NSX, and Nissan Skyline. Supercars from the four main automakers in Japan, and all were hailed as great in their time periods. Maybe only the NSX is the closest in relation to this actual Forbes list, but the point is that every single one of them has produced a fantastic sports car.
There's also a car from niche Japanese automaker Tommy Kaira that produces a car called the ZZ. Look it up.

Tommy Kaira ZZII a small niche car yes, but with 550hp, 0-60 mid 3 seconds, and 210mph top speed. If they still produced it, it would be on this list.
But they don't so it's not, my point is that the Japanese know how to do a sports car, and just because they don't currently offer one does not take away from that fact.
The topic of "Lexus" is a surefire way to rile up any AutoSpies thread, but I'm still going to say that the LF-A will definitely have the potential to make lists such as these, as well as the next NSX which is guaranteed off of the first one to do really well in this market.

RX-7, Supra, 3000GT and Skyline I agree are not "supercars" in the typical Euro regard, but the NSX and ZZII I do consider supercars. If the Corvette is considered a supercar, then those two cars are also supercars!
I guess we're back to the definition of a supercar which has been argued many times over. What makes a supercar? Is it simply its performance numbers? Or is it a specific engine size/displacement? Or is it simply the size of the car?

One interesting comment in the article is how we rely so heavily on 0 to 60 times. The author even mentions that this is the first thing we look for in determining a cars performance. In reality more people should also be concerned with 30 to 50, 60 or 70 mph passing times as that is a more prevelant action than stoplight drag racing to 60. I rarely if at all race someone to 60 from a standstill as there aren't too many places you can do that safely in NY. But on the highway that's were I tend to "stretch my legs". That's just me...I'm sure that's a different story in some other part of the country. One other thing, (and we see it here everyday), is how we hold a manufacturers or car magazines stated 0-60 times as the undisputed truth. We don't even consider the environmental settings or the ability of the driver when arguing who's faster. As far as I'm concerned no 0-60 time is so absolute that I'd put my life on it. Some of you would actually drive off a cliff trying to prove your "favorite" car can do 0 to 60 faster than the next guy's car. Even at dragstrip events you almost certainly would not get the same 1/4 mile time consistently over and over again. It basically boils down to the driver, condition of the tires, and the environment at that given point in time.

The reason is because there is no market for it. Why do you think there are no Supras, RX-7s, 3000GTs, or NSXs in production for 2007? Most of the Japanese supercars were pulling sub 5's in six-cylinder engines over a decade ago, now that they are bringing back most of these supercars with more technology, we can truly see what makes them stand apart.
