Joint GM Toyota Products Come Under Investigation Yet Again

General Motors Corp's Pontiac Vibe sport wagon and Toyota Motor Corp's Matrix wagon and Corolla sedan are under investigation by US regulators after motorists complained power windows get stuck and, in some cases, shatter.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began an engineering analysis, the second-step in the safety review process, after the agency and automakers received 503 complaints, according to NHTSA's Web site. The investigation may affect 676,747 vehicles from the 2003 and 2004 model years.

Motorists complained about side-front power windows getting stuck, making popping noises and shattering during operation. A total of 36 injuries were reported.

I'm glad people complain when a product lets them down. Without complainers nothing would ever get fixed. Substandard product is symptomatic of companies that dominate the market. Managers in these companies are under constant pressure to deliver profits -- it becomes all about improving profitability and share price. Buyers start beating up on suppliers who are forced to cut corners or go out of business. Substandard components get installed in vehicles at the expense of the consumer.

Its everyones obligation to complain to business when it gets it wrong. Its the only way businesses know to improve.

My next point is this. When you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas. So what on earth is Toyota doing making cars with GM?

Yes, its a legit article, but it's all you ever post.

I'm currently researching a new model from a make that is at the bottom of the reliability charts - and sure enough - to my demise - its experienced several problems and recalls already. Havent seen one of these articles posted yet...

Your bias is ruining what I have always thought to be a great website.

I expect a good -12 on this one, go for it.

Actually they get published as they surface. If more of one brand show up than another it is because there happens to be more info in the press.

Did you complain when I posted the recall of the Cayenne’s earlier in the week. (bet you overlooked that one).

Hmm how about the Murano and the EX35 recall just a few days ago as well?

However when you see an issue you are sensitive to then you jump on it as bias?

There are two sides of every equation, and all you see is what I post. I understand that, however you don’t see what I turn down. That is the catch. I turn away far more derogatory article against certain marques than I ever care to mention.

So yes my friend, while you see some negative articles, you are shielded from a veritable sea of negative as well.

I’ll be the first to say we give both sides of the equation, the good and the bad. If you wanted only brand specific PR there are tons of brand specific fan sites that only give glowing reviews. They do a good job of it too. The problem is you never get exposed to the real world. I care to live in a world where you see all sides of the equation not just the propaganda.

I wouldn't expect a 1-2 for it either. But I would have to admit, if you are a leading marque then you are more susceptible to being reported. And yes if you think about it numbers ply a large factor in it, 2000 Kia's being recalled for a brake light issue, won't get the press of 200,000 Fords being recalled either.

Actually on a busy day you may not hear of a recall due to a variety of factors.

However if you see a recall out there and we haven't reported it, simply submit the article. It is as simple as that.

It says GM and Toyota in the title, which is misleading sounding like a criminal investigation on the 2 companies. This is just an NHTSA engineering analysis and not a recall. The composite number $676k is just production vehicles, not the complaints.

This is the NUMI plant and probably a result of using cheap nylon gears for the window. Typically the GMs and Toyota did not have this issue as prevalent as other such as Ford,Honda or Nissan.

If anything, it's probably faulty windows/glass if they crack that easily. I'm surprised that a motor can apply enough pressure to start cracking, let alone shattering, a window. My Jeep's windows freeze in the winter a lot after I wash my car and I usually have to wait atleast a day before the window will roll down.

Actually the motor keeps pushing up on the window...and over time with the constant pressure up...the glass weakens and thus breaks.
